We have not noticed any performance changes in the brakes, just noticed the ABS light has come on. Does one need ABS to work? What would happen if we didn't repair it for a while?
The abs is part of the safety system in that it stops the wheels from locking up under heavy braking. This allows you to steer the vehicle out of a bad situation. During normal braking the ABS does not work as the wheels are turning and so there is no requirement for the system to work
If you wish to continue driving and are considerate in that you drive responsibly there is no need to race it to replace the system. I would seek a second opinion from an accredited brake specialist shop as the dealer may only want to sell parts and not repair the unit
Testimonial: "Thanks! We got a second opinion and the mechanic noted that the dealer turned off the ABS light so it was impossible to run the diagnostic. But it should come back on, and then we'll get a better picture. His worst case quote was about $1900 which is a ballpark since he can't yet run the diagnostic test."
