We damaged the positive side because of corrosion. Do we have to replace the entire thing? Or can we take of the clamp and add a new one?
You can purchase a new terminal(clamp) at your local auto parts store, they are relatively inexpensive ($4-7). Before purchasing the terminal, you should cut off the old terminal and inspect the copper wire inside. If it is also corroded (green or white crud), the corrosion shold be removed. Try to cut off one-inch section's of the corroded wire until nice clean copper wire is revealed and attach the clean copper to the new terminal. If there is not enough wire left, or the entire cable is corroded, puchase a new terminal (clamp) in addition to new battery cable. It should be available anywhere batteries are sold (*autoparts store, walmart, etc)
Many times terminals just need a good cleaning instead of replacement. To clean a battery terminal, use a Can af Coca-Cola applied liberally and a wire brush (sounds crazy but works well). Battery terminal protectors and battery terminal lube will avoid future corrosion and are cheap (terminal protectors - $2, small packet of terminal lube=$2).
Good luck!
