Pull the plugs, see if they are black. To much gas. replace the fuel pressure regulator. If white, not enough fuel. Check the fuel filter, if dirty or rust colored replace the tank, pump and filter again.

My 99 mercury cougar is a 2.5 v6 (Problem) it sputters all the dash lights go off and the power steering dosen't work and the motor dies after it runs for a few minutes. the car will start after it sits...

Sounds like a fuel problem. The electronics shutting down are the result of the dying power. Start by changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't work; I'd look into the fuel pump.

How to change fuel pump on mercury cougar 99 2.5L V6

The Cougar uses the same platform as the Contour so it should be like it is on my Contour. Remove the rear seat bottom and you'll see a cover in the floor. Remove that cover and you'll be able to see the top of the fuel tank. You'll need to remove the lines coming out of the top and use a punch with a hammer to rotate that locking ring. Once you remove the ring you can pull the pump module out of the tank. Be careful not to bend the fuel level float. You'll be able to see how to get to the pump once the module is out. Just take the cover off and put the new pump in the module and re-install.

Jumbing when accelarete maybe fuel injectors?

Check fuel injectors with a noid light for electrical pulsing issues, and by listening with a stethoscope on each injector to listen for a telltale click (indicating it's working when engine running at idle).

How hard is it to do a tune up on a 99 mercury

If it's a six cylinder, the air filter and fuel filters are accessible. The front spark plugs are not too hard. The rear plugs are difficult and you can expect to tear a knuckle or two trying to change them.

Cars turns over but won't start

One thing to check is if the fuel pump is working and what the fuel pressure is. The pump is inside the fuel tank. The pressure must be 35 to 65 psi. The pump can be working but if the pressure is not enough the car will not start.

Engine won't start, turns over, but no fuel

I have a similar problem with my 99 cougar. It will start when I spray starting fluid in the intake and I have gas at the test point but it doesn't seem to make it to the injectors.
