SOURCE: 1981 corvette instrument panel lamp replacement

I'll tell you, but when you go to do it, you'll probably curse Chevrolet, your car, and me! lol!

You have to reach behind the dash. Even with the seat in the back position, you'll turn into a contortionist! Place an old couch cushion, or something similar on the ground/driveway next to the car, with the door open. Kneel on the couch cushion. Reach up under the dash, and back behind it, with your left hand, while holding onto the steering column with your right.

It's hard to describe this to someone who has never done this before. (Just think. You'll be the expert, when someone you know asks you, when you're done!)

You are feeling for a plastic bulb holder. This holder is about the size of a dime. It resembles one of a gas stove's knobs. It has a round base, and from the middle of the base, it comes up into rectangular shape. If you look at this -> T <- the base is the top of the T. Turn the T upside down, and you'll have the basic shape.

This plastic holder has the lamp bulb in it. You turn it to the RIGHT.
As you face the instrument cluster, it is turned to the Right. You just turn it one quarter turn, then it will come out.
Once you get one in your hand, you'll know why it was difficult to describe. You'll also immediately see how it turns in, and locks into place.

The bulb itself it extracted, by holding the bulb holder in your hand, bulb facing you. You push in, and turn the bulb to the Left.
It is at this point, that I advise you to wear some protective gloves of some kind. The bulb base, could be corroded down in the socket. You may exert enough force to break the bulb, and cut your fingers.
I advise Safety above ALL ELSE!

I also advise that you replace one bulb at a time.
Notice the brass metal ring around the bulb holder base?
This corrodes after time, giving a poor contact. You can take a little fine steel wool, and clean it up. Use care as the steel wool can catch, and bend the brass ring, misshaping it.

Behind the dash panel that you can't see, is a thin plastic flat strip.
Another thing hard to describe. Envision a large U shaped flat piece of plastic, on the back of your instrument housing. The U shape will be upside down, in relation to how it sits on the back of the instrument housing. It's about 1/32nd of an inch thick, and about 2 inches wide.

There are thin flat strips of copper, making a path all the way around this strip. There are holes in this strip, for the various lamp bulbs. The flat copper strips go around these holes, making a connection to the bulb holder. That's what that brass ring on the bulb holder contacts, when it's screwed in.

Dashboard lights stopped working i checked all the fuses its a 2007 lincoln mark lt

All of these are not working ? Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination The non-dimmable lighting system illuminates the following components:
  • Roof opening panel control switch
  • Window control switches
  • Door lock control switches
  • Sliding backlite window control switch
The dimmable panel lighting system illuminates the following components:
  • Adjustable pedal switch
  • Manual climate control assembly
  • Electronic automatic temperature control (EATC) assembly
  • Headlamp switch
  • Instrument cluster
  • Message center switch
  • Audio unit
  • Steering wheel audio and climate control switches
  • Speed control switches
  • Digital versatile disc (DVD) player
  • Floor shifter
  • Parking aid switch
  • Four wheel drive (4WD) switch
  • Traction control switch
The instrument panel dimmer switch is a contact switch that signals the desired level of brightness sent to the instrument cluster and dimmable components.
You checked all the fuse's ?
  1. Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
    • Headlamp switch
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 6 (15A)
      • 22 (10A)
    • CJB circuit breaker 401 (30A)
    • Auxiliary relay box 1 fuse 1 (5A)
    • Circuitry
    • Headlamp switch
    • Instrument panel dimmer switch
    • Clockspring
    • Illumination source(s)
    • CJB
Did you check these fuse's in the central junction box and
  • Auxiliary relay box 1 fuse 1 (5A) You don't need to check them all ,just the right one's . How did you check them ? pull them out an look ?
  • Principles of Operation
Dimmable Illumination With the parking lamps ON, voltage is supplied to the instrument panel dimmer switch (part of the headlamp switch). The instrument panel dimmer switch then sends a variable pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage to the instrument cluster and other dimmable switches and components.
Fixed Illumination With the ignition switch in the START or RUN position, the delay accessory relay provides voltage to the non-dimmable switches. The delay accessory relay is controlled through the instrument cluster.

My instrument lights not working on my 81 corvette

Check the fuse to see if it is blown,be sure to have the head lights on,and the dash dimmer on all the way bright, when checking the fuse,if it is not blown, check the fuse to see if it has voltage on that fuse,if it does not, then replace the head light switch. If the fuse has voltage to it,then either a bad connection at the cluster,or the bulbs are burned out in the cluster.

Dash light

Is it the lights or the LEDs? If it's the lights, check the fuse first. If the fuse is good, check the dimmer switch. Do the other lights inside dim? If no replace dimmer. If yes, then you can remove the dash cluster from the dash and replace the lights. They are installed in the back of the cluster and are very cheap.

Dim light in instument panel at night on my 1989 corvette.

there could be a bad connection between your dimmer switch and the lights themselves. often times through vibration and wear and tear the connectors degrade. check this first. also the dimmer switch itself could be the cause.check all the connections associated with the panel lights, look for loose wires and/or bad connections if there are none replace the dimmer switch

No instrument panel lights on a 2003 chevy monte carlo

Most likely this is caused by either the dimmer being turned off (happens all the time on my Corvette) or the dimmer is defective.
