Your shifter cables have gona bad, i had the same problem and its not your clutch thats causing the problem. Your shifter cables are just worn out and you need to replace them

SOURCE: atomatic transmission won't only has second gear

Sounds like you have a solonoid out in your transmission. No simple fix for this. You will more than likely have to drop the transmission to replace solonoid.

SOURCE: 2000 montero sport will not start,or turnover

There is a switch at the base of your shifter that prevents starting when transmission is in gear. Your switch is loose or broken. Remove console to access switch for repair. If you have questions, please let us know.

2005 Ford Focus zx4 SES 5 speed manual transmission won't go into reverse

Hi Jeremy smith, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
buy the service manual and the cables must be adjusted correctly
the clutch must work too.
why work blind, ?

the cable for 5/reverse is adjusted wrong
we can not see the damage there,
damage to fire wall? RUST DAMAGE.
if you had and read the service manual
it would show how to do all that..
the transmission can be shifted with no cables on it, by hand, to prove it does go to REV.
and if that test fails , you know know the cables or even shifter parts are bad or assembled and adjusted the wrong way.
this is a pure mechanical problem no computers or magic.

q2
shift linkage lines were broke where it came through the firewall
what does this mean to a blind man on the internet. we cant see that damage or the extent. if just the cables were bad say just the cables, and not the firewall.
some cars have clamps there,
see this notch here, top of 7230 the cable and all parts end to and must move this gear dog, or fails. must index it and move it.
or it fails.

5th-undefined-undefined-0.jpg if the below works by hand(and is trick)_ the cables back are bad or set wrong.

shift-undefined-undefined-1.jpg

shift-undefined-undefined-2.jpg

clips-undefined-undefined-5.jpg lost or have clips connected wrong?
clips-undefined-undefined-4.jpg I can NOT see missing parts the PO remove or lost or set wrong with 3gear out. ford.com has all parts here.

How do I adjust the shift linkage cables.

Your shifter cables are most likely worn out or stretched out. Adjusting the cables moves the shifter arm a little bit. The turnbuckles for adjusting are inside the center console under the shifter arm. To get to them, you have to take out the center console. One cable controls side to side movement and the other controls front to back, don't adjust the wrong one on accident. 25311622-za4bqvjhdrn3arnyccyp5xaz-3-0.jpg

My 03 Nissan Altima will not shift into P. It wil show that it's in reverse when I'm in park. When I go to reverse it will shift into neutral and so on. I think I need a new shifter cable clip. But I'm not...

Hi.You still can get key out by pressing the secret button near the shifter. Then you have to check adjustment nut It locates on AT at the coupling of cable and transmission shifter. There must be 5mm hole it must be aligned in P (or N i forgot) range.Just need to lose 12 mm nut,put gear shifter in P ,insert 5mm drill bit, then retight cable nut.

2004 neon manuel will not shift into reverse. I have got it into reverse a couple times and it drives fine.

It could be an adjustment issue for the release lever that removes the block that stops it from freely going into reverse or a transmission problem brewing. The lever you lift on the shifter before going into reverse connects to a cable that goes tot he transmission, if that cable is out of adjustment and isn't retracting the block properly then you will have problems getting into reverse. If you can get it to go into reverse by letting the clutch out and putting it in the reverse position then it is a clutch problem. The neon has a lot of bad press but that manual transmission is pretty dependable but does need periodic adjustment. For step by step troubleshooting and adjustment steps I recommend the Haynes or Chilton's Repair manual on the vehicle. Haynes is a little easier to follow in my opinion but Chilton's has a pretty good manual as well.

Reverse is not where it belongs, it is between reverse and neutral

you may have a bent shifter rod under your car. can you pull the rubber boot up on shifter and see if it has not came loose from the shifter inside? you will need to remove the screws that hold the cover on. on the floorboard. if the problems not there,it's on the shifter linkage rod. the bushings in the shifter rods may have gone bad or have been jammed by erratic shifting,or just every day useage.that was solution for manual shift transmission.[this is solution for automatic transmission] your shifter cable may only out of adjustment,or your shifter cable may have stretched due to cold weather or just worn. open your hood, this will take 2 people to work together.one to see the transmission shift on top of transmission, the other to shift the transmission. apply the emergency brake, engine off, shift the gears back and forwards from drive to park. does it look like the cable or linkage has play or slop in it? if it does you can adjust it by putting the car in park and then tighten the bolt on top of the cable,on the top of the transmission. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Dual gate Hurst shifter adjustment

Hello! Here is what I was able to track down:

Hurst Dual Gate Shifter Assembly Parts Breakdown:

c73f4fe.gif

Removing & Replacing The Hurst Dual/Gate
1. Disconnect car battery.

2. Remove Knob. Remove four Phillips head screws that hold escutcheon plate down to console.
NOTE: SHORT SCREW IS USED IN REAR RIGHT - HAND HOLE. Remove escutcheon plate and console from floor tunnel.

3. Lift selector indicator lamp housing out of shifter and pull bulb socket out of lamp housing. Disconnect wire connectors from combination Back - up light / Neutral safety switch.

4. Remove two 1/4 - 20 x 1/2 hex-head cap screws that fasten Dual / Gate shifter to rear mounting bracket. Remove 1/4 - 20 x 1/2 hex - head cap screw that holds cable bracket to shifter frame. Remove two #10 - 32 x 3/8 slotted head cap screws that fasten Dual / Gate shifter to front bracket. Free shifter from cable by removing cotter pin and washer.

5. Remove combination Neutral - safety / and Back - up light switch. Install switch on Replacement unit.

6. Install replacement shifter unit in reverse order of removal of original unit.

7. ADJUST CABLE: SEE FIGURE 1 (Below)
Loosen nut that fastens cable pin to transmission control arm. Loosen nut enough to allow pin to slide in the slot in the arm. Turn the arm to NEUTRAL position. Move the stick to NEUTRAL. Tighten the adjusting nut. Test movement of stick and check to be sure that stick positions agree with transmission control operation.

8. SEE FIGURE 2 (Below)
Connect car battery. Apply hand brake. Move stick to NEUTR AL position. Press foot on brake pedal. Start engine. If starter fails to operate, Neutral Safety switch must be adjusted. Adjustment is made with a long-bladed Phillips screwdriver through the "Street" gate. This screw is directly in front of the st ick. Turn the screw about 1/2 turn past the point where starter operates. (STICK MUST REMAIN IN "NEUTRAL" WHILE ADJUSTMENT IS MADE). Starter should operate ONLY when stick is in PARK or NEUTRAL position.
