Ford focus tdci not starting and white smoke coming out of the exhaust

It is a clear case of the glow plugs malfunction. It had happened with my neighbor who tried to start his diesel focus one day.
Even jump starting with another battery didn't solve the starting problem.

You could also check the EGR valve for damages and if you want to save a couple of bucks, then go in for used parts for the focus from Good used Focus Stuff

Are there any plugs on a turbo on a focus tdci 04 estate and what are they for

There are no plugs on a turbo, might be only a sensor but very unlikely, there are heater plugs in the engine on each cylinder, and their work is to heat up the cylinder for correct firing of the diesel/air mixture when engine cold.

Very occassionally i have loss of power and black smoke from the exhaust of my ford focas tdci estate 2002 model. It lasts for only about 500 yards then the smoke clears and it surges forward and is o.k.....

MAF?

The mass airflow sensor is located right after the airfilter and can be the source of the problem you describe.

Sounds like it is overfuelling during these episodes.

Power loss and black smoke?

I had a similar issue to this after I got in a VERY small fender bender (literally) in an 87 Turbo Supra. In my case, my pasenger fender got pushed in JUST enough to crack a charge pipe and cause a boost leak.

Basically, what was happening was the turbo would spool and build boost, the mass fair flow sensor would read all this air coming in and tell the ECU to dial up the the appropriate amount of fuel. When the air reached the cracks in the charge pipe, it would escape out of them. Thus there was a much lower air-to-fuel ratio, causing less fuel to combust, which lead to power loss and black smoke out of the exhaust.

My guess is either an oxygen sensor, or more likely a boost leak.

Good luck mate.

Ford focus 1.8 tdci 115bhp 2002

Turbo Wastegate (cut away) must be adjusted correctly.
A regular maintenance routine for a turbo charged vehicle will ensure proper operation and have less risk of breaking down, as well as damaging components.
