If you actually have power steering on a Fiero someone must have installed it because as far as I know GM never sold any Fiero's with power steering. They were planning on it, but if they had it would have been an electrical system like the ones common on new cars today, but in 1988 it would have been unique. You may have to contact the person who had it installed or otherwise determine what unit you have. If you search online you will find people who have installed power steering on Fiero's. You may find your car described, but at least you may get a good idea what you have.
If it's not spinning when battery voltage is applied, it will most likely need to be replaced.
Jack up rear of car.
Disconnect negative battery terminal.
Put car on jack stands.
Laying under the car from the rear, the starter will be on the drivers side towards the front of the car. (Looks like a metal can, has I believe 2 bolts holding it to the engine.)
Disconnect all the wires going to the starter.
Remove the bolts holding it to the engine.
It is HEAVY, be careful not to drop it on yourself.
There should be shims between the starter and the engine. DO NOT LOSE them, and remember where they were so you can reinstall them on the new starter. ENGINE/STARTER damage can occur if not reinstalled!
If you have another vehicle take the starter with you to an Auto Parts store, most of them will test the part for free. If it is bad, you already have it there so you won't have to pay a core charge.
So no power anywhere? Nothing at all? I'm assuming the battery is fine since it ran the day before.
This actually happened to me one time in my fiero
What is happening is no power is getting to the car at all, no power is reaching the engine, lights, interior, etc.
This simply or not so simply means there is a severed connection from the battery.
1) Check BOTH positive and negative connections, make sure the posts are clean and make a solid metal-to-metal contact and see if there is power yet.
2) Check the power junction area (or whatever it's called) in the engine bay (on the passenger side wall near the battery). There are red wires and such which supplies the car with power in this junction area attached to posts and inside of black plastic connectors. Look for worn or severed wires which may have come loose over the years.
When this happened to my fiero, one of the wires corroded and came loose from the post where it was bolted on and attached to other wires.
Just reconnect the loose wire(s), you may have to crimp new ends or whatever, but that should fix it.
If not, start hunting for where the 12v supply from the battery is cut off. Use a multimeter and good luck!
1) Running fuel pump to remove water from tank will likely not empty it all, but it might help. Will still be some liquid in bottom of tank.
2) More than likely, the gas has gummed up and is no good, While your draining of the tank will help, may still need to change the fuel filter and clean the injectors. The ability to keep engine running while pouring into the intake is a good sign, but mayfind that more parts need to be cleaned and replaced prior to solving the problem.
There are only 4 ways to open a Fiero trunk. With the key, with the electric trunk release, with a locksmith, and with a big hammer and screwdriver.
Some year Fieros required the parking brake be applied to activate the electric release, some had to be in park, and some of the early models would work just by pushing the button. The ground is through the latch, itself. If anything has gotten on the body portion of the latch and the trunk was closed, like a towel or plastic bag, that prevents the trunk portion from making metal to metal contact with the body striker, the release won't activate. If you can put power to the car, insert a key into the trunk lock, clamp one end of a negative jumper cable to it, and the other end underneath to some part of the frame. Hit the release button. This trick completes the ground circuit directly into the latch mechanism and bypasses the body striker plate.
If this doesn't work, remove the release switch from the dash, unplug it, and apply power with a 9V flashlilght battery to the terminals. You may have to play with the emergency brake handle during these processes.
Does your Fiero have a power trunk switch? I had the same problem where I locked the keys in the trunk and the battery was dead. I had a portable car jumper that had a cigarette lighter socket and basically hooked it up through the cigarette lighter in the Fiero. The power flowed from the portable jumper through the car to give it enough power to open the trunk. You could also splice a cigarette lighter cord to a battery and plug it in.
If you don't have power trunk then you may have to drill the lock. I have heard that Fiero's were all wired for power trunks but you had to pay for the "option" to have them put in the switch when they were band new. I wouls also suggest taking off the small trim panel to the right of the intrument cluster and see if there is a power trunk connector there. If there is then you could purchase a power trunk switch to pop the trunk. Unfortunately I own 5 Fiero's all of which came with power trunk so I was never able to verify if that rumor was true. Good luck.
