Well the gas cap light means the gas cap may be loose. The actual condition for the light to come on is when the engine computer tests the fuel tank venting system for leaks. The no start problem could have been too much or too little pressure in the fuel tank which could also make the gas cap light come on.
It varies for every car. Usually 1-1.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. I drove my last '93 Ford Taurus around until the gauge said it was empty. Lifted the car and took the gas tank off and it had 3 or more gallons still in it. Here's some fun, zero your odometer, fill the gas tank and drive it until the low fuel light comes on. Then drive it till it dies out, obviously somewhere near home or where someone can drop off a full gas can.
The spring or wire that connects your pedal to the throttle body may broken or damaged. Check under your hood and look at the throttle body (it's the carburetor looking thing). There should be a steel wire connected to it coming from the back of the engine bay. It should connect on the side where you'll see a few springs. If nothing looks broken there, turn the part of the throttle body connected to the spring and wire. If it revs up when you move it, then the cable could be broken somewhere between there and the gas pedal.
Alternatively, the linkage on the pedal could have been disconnected some how. Check behind and above the gas pedal to see if eveything is connected properly.

Probably a bad seal at the mounting where pump assembly goes into tank, but COULD be a vent hose.Get a mirror and FLASHLIGHT, NOT a trouble light(fire hazard),and get under there and look for where it's coming from. don-ohio
change the fuel filter for one, this is telling you that your pick up in the tank is getting clogged, I would drop my tank, and drain it, flush it, and check the pump at that time
I just looked at an 05 taurus it looks like a screw sticking out the side of car? It is the check gas cap symbol.Your gas cap is loose or you have an evap system leak
