CHECK DOOR SWITCHES. OPEN DOORS ONE AT A TIME AND PRESS THE SWITCH IN ( AS IF THE DOOR WAS SHUT ) . WORK THE SWITCH IN AND OUT. THE SWITCH COULD NEED TO BE RE ADJUSTED OR MABY CONTACTS ARE JUST DIRTY. ( OR JUST REMOVE THE BULB BLACK TAPE OVER THE LIGHT WOULD LOOK TACKY ) THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY THIS COULD HAPPEN. WIRES LOOSE AND SHORTING ON SWITCHES. AND OTHERS GOOD LUCK

The lights are programmed to shut off when you shift to drive or reverse. The other problem may be a defective door latch mounted door ajar/courtesy light switch. Each door has one and the dealer can read them with a special scanner called an NGS
Sounds like you have a short in your dash, where the smoke is coming from. If you haven't already you may want to pull the fuse until you can find where it is shorted, because where there is smoke there can end up being fire.
Pull Fuse #31 in your driver side under dash fuse panel. Bottom means closest to the floor. Second row from bottom. Second fuse in from driver side door 15A. Controls all interior lighting and courtesy lights. Under hood and trunk.
Pull it and your good to go until you drop off to have the control module replaced. You're Welcome!
the door switches are part of the door latch, the easiest way to remedy this is to spray liberal amounts of WD40 into each latch and open and close the each door a few times, this should loosen up the latch and solve your problem.
i have an 89 mark 7,with a feature called courtesy lights.just touch the door handle at night and the interior lights all come on.they will go out after a couple of minutes if i dont enter the car. it is a good thing i think.
