it may be just a case of replacing the gasket or the top part of the housing may be warped or cracked, if it is warped you could try & repair it by using a piece of glass as a flat surface on something solid EG. a table & using a sheet of WET & DRY emery paper on the glass & rub the top part of the housing backwards & forwards across the emery paper to level it, but if it is cracked you will have to replace it .....hope this helps......cheers
most sensible way is to buy a new regulator, ebay or parts store, then take your car and the regulator to a glass shop and pay them 50 bucks to R&R. the whole regulator wears out with use and age so it is folly to replace only the motor, plus they are generally riveted in so saves labor time to replace the whole thing. takes special tools and fasteners top the whole job and the glass shop has that stuff on hand, you will have to run all over town to find them. Save yourself the busted knuckles and time and just pay a glass shop 50 bucks to do it for you.
HOW MUCH ?? YOU JEST look on autotrader.co.uk they are worth a monkey top wack )monkey is slang for 500) This vehicle has problems and is only worth what it can be weighed in for to the scrap man so dont pay more than monkey whatever you do ,If you really want one of these heaps of junk then import one from the UK where they are cheaper ,if you do buy it then answer post and i will help as i have one as well ,top of the range with white leather ,and yes its still junk ----buy a merc
You can buy a new top for less than two hundred dollars. Search the net, get a cloth one they last longer, Read how to change a convertible top get a staple gun and go for it. Or drive by an auto upholstery shop and talk to some of the workers and try to get them to do a side job. The labor is minimal the mark up is the price of the top. Shops will charge you $700 to $900 for a top that they only pay a few hundred. Do the research or get some black engine silicon at an auto parts store, its flexible and sticks to almost anything. Blast out the cracks with compressed air, or water, run the car through a car wash. Then apply the silicon on a warm day or in a heated garage smearing the round bead that is in the crack flat so at least some of the silicon is clinging to the material of the top. Good Luck Steve E
Your glass was originally heat sealed to the top material. If the delamination area is small, you may be able to refasten it with urethane adhesive. The same stuff that glass shops use to glue windows to metal. If the delamination has progressed farther than 4-6 inches, you need a new top.
Don't bother with a glass shop, they don't do convertibles. Talk to a convertible top or auto upholstery shop.

buy a new window regulator, look on ebay before you pay dealer price. take it to a glass shop and they can install it for you. you might not find a new regulator for VW at a parts store
These are items which you replace, not repair. You choice is buy new, or exchange yours for rebuilt or remanufactured units, or buy used. New expect to pay well over $100, rebuilt over $50, and of course you can buy working used ones from junkyards for about $20. You get what you pay for, I never buy a wear item used. Fenders and windows OK, but not anything like this. Look on youtube.com and you can find videos of folks changing these. Important to electrically isolate the battery from the car, before you begin.
try another auto glass shop. these tabs at the bottom are very common. BE AWARE, when taking off the old broken tabs off of the glass, there is always a chance of the glass breaking. then you would have to buy a new window. look for a company that has an address, a place that you can go for these types of problems.
