Sounds like possibly a security issue shutting the engine down. Is the security light on the dash on ?
Yes there is...what does that mean.
you need to scan the modules to see what security code is being set so you will have a idea of what to do next really. If you do not have the capability to do so then you will have to have someone that does do it for you. For some reason your car thinks it has been stolen and isnt allowing you to start it. Try another key if you have one and see what happens.
I am somewhat unclear on did you say it will stay running if you hold the throttle open some but dies if you let off the gas pedal ? If that is the case I doubt it is a security problem but more like a mass air flow sensor problem, dirty throttle body or idle air control valve problem. In any case you need to check for codes and observe scan data or you are just guessing.

SOURCE: My 97 Chevy Malibu won't stay running.
there are two components that you should be looking at one is called a throttle position sensor and the other is a idle air control motor/valve.these two will make the car hard star or not start at all.the are both located in the general area of the intake manifold right where the throttle cable connects.
