Sometimes the trans fluid gets contaminated an leaves deposits on the sensors and shift solenoids that the trans computer gets confused signals and has a hissy fit, stopping and starting begins the process all over again so maybe the auto requires servicing. Check condition of the trans fluid. Good luck Bill.
Run the fault codes and check for problem TCM unit.

I had the same issue with my '05 A4 1.8T. Turns out it was the RPM sensor. Audi tried to tell me it was teh fuel pump and the cam-shaft positioning sensor. Paid for teh fuel pump replacement and it died 6 blocks from the dealership. Then they replaced the RPM snesor, works great now... Except it's still an Audi.

The problem is most likely an input or output sensor on the gearbox. I tried changing the transmission oil which worked for a few weeks and the problem started again. I also tried removing the sensor and wiping them which also worked for a little while. In the end I bought a second hand sensor from a wrecker for about $60 and no problems for the last 4 months. You can find them online as a set for about $150 new but I have a little bit of scottish in my blood. There are a few posts on the web about how to change the sensor. It takes about 20 mins for a handy person and it took me about a half hour.
