I have an smart head 1/2 horse power pump. When I turn on any tap in the house no water only until I switch the pump switch on and off it works. I serviced the pump, changed the bearing, seal and circuit board...same issue. Would the pressure gauge cause this?

No, but the pressure switch would. If you can't find it to replace it, it probably would be best to take it in for service.

Oil pressure fluctuation is normal in the older XJ's and is nothing to be overly concerned about unless it is frequently dropping below 2 on the oil pressure gauge. As far as the leak in the power steering, it is most likely a bad seal in on of the steering gearboxes. You can get a seal repari kit from numerous different vendors online, however, it is much easier to just replace the entire rack and pinion instead of trying to rebuild the old one. Also, replacing the rack entirely eliminates the possibility of the seals being replaced wrong and also eliminates the possibility of you replacing the seals only to have something else break in the relatively near future.

Hi, Sounds like you have tried about everything. Ok the aux. coolant switch is for the electric pump for the heater core will not cause an over heating condition just a longer warm up of the heater core. Has the cooling system been bleed properly if there is a trapped air pocket it will not let coolant circulate. Was the new thermostat installed correctly? They have a vent that needs to be towards the top or they trap air on the back side and cant take an accurate reading to open and close. Other areas to look at would be proper operation of the fan clutch, if they fail they can cause the fan to not lock up properly and supply enough air movement through the radiator. The aux. electric fans and their temp switches do you hear them coming on are they coming on at the right temp.

- Ignition Coil F Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
The ignition signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- The engine may be harder to start
- Engine hesitation

Possible Causes:
- Open or short in the ignition coil circuit
- Ignition coil circuit shorted to ground
- Ignition coil connector
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged PCM or ECM

Possible Solution:
- If damage, repair ignition coil circuit
- Replaced ignition coil
- Replaced PCM or ECM

P0152 - O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
The heated oxygen sensor 1 is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The heated oxygen sensor 1 signal is sent to the ECM. The ECM adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Possible Causes:
- Harness or connectors (The heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is open or shorted.)
- Front Heater oxygen sensor heater (Bank 2) may be faulty

Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The ECM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

Possible Solution:
Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes of the problem.

P2197 - DODGE - Sys Too Rich at Hier Load Bank1
Means that the O2 sensors on each bank are seeing WAY too much oxygen in the exhaust gas. In normal operation the signal from the O2 sensors should swing back and forth between rich and lean. Your sensors are locked on lean.

Those codes are the same as P0174 (and P0171). Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Most common place is the PCV elbow where it connects to the throttle body adapter.

My Chevy Equinox 2005 is over heating.

The unlikely one is the head gasket. Do you have water in your oil, do you have mayonnaise on the oil filler cap?

If the area under the thermostat is dry, the most likely issue is water pump failure. Empty the system, backflush the radiator and heater hoses with a garden hose. Replace the water pump and thermostat. Fill the system with coolant, turn the engine on, heater to maximum temperature and keep topping up the radiator until the coolant is hot and the thermostat opens. Squeezing the top and bottom radiator hoses also helps to get air out. Turn off the engine and top up the radiator one last time. Put the cap on and then top up the expansion reservoir.

One thing often overlooked with overheating issues, make sure the radiator fan is working properly.

2006 pt cruiser, we changed the thermostat, doesnt overheat all the way but in idle it rises, as long as the rmp gauge is up to about 2 it goes back down until we let of the gas. Pls help!

At idle the water pump turns slowly as compared to when the engine is running at higher rpm. I believe the water pump has lost efficiency, probably due to corrosion of the impeller. If it were mine I'd change the water pump and quite possibly switch to a different type of coolant. Never ever use tap water in a radiator, Always use distilled water in the gallon jugs. They're about 99 cents each at the grocery store. Minerals in tap water calcify and clog the small passages whereas distilled has no minerals and doesn't.

Can i replace the power steering reservoir in my 1993 grand cherokee?

Hi Riley:
Nice car, I have the same '93 5.2L V8, according with the Jeep Repair Manual for 1993 at 1998, check this procedure to RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT - REMOVAL
(1) Remove power steering pump. Refer to Pump Replacement in this section.
(2) Clean exterior of pump with solvent.
(3) Clamp the pump body in a soft jaw vice.
(4) Pry up tab and slide the retaining clip off (Fig. 7).
(5) Remove fluid reservoir from pump body. Remove and discard O-ring seal (Fig. 8).

INSTALLATION
(1) Lubricate new O-ring Seal with Mopar Power Steering Fluid or equivalent.
(2) Install O-ring seal in housing.
(3) Install reservoir onto housing.
(4) Slide and tap in reservoir retainer clips until tab locks to housing.
(5) Install power steering pump. Refer to Pump Replacement in this section.

    How to replace the water pump on a 1992 geo tracker 1.6 liter engine

    Water Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
    During these procedures, identify all components removed from the engine so that they may be reinstalled in their original positions. If discarding the old components so that new components can be installed, identifying the old items is not necessary.


    1.3L and 1.6L Engines

    1. Remove the timing belt cover, timing belt, tensioner, plate and spring.
    2. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
    3. Remove the one (1.6L MFI engines) or two (1.3L and 1.6L TFI engines) small rubber seals from between the water pump and the oil pump, and the water pump and the cylinder head.
    4. If necessary for clearance, remove the oil level dipstick tube retaining bolt from the engine block and the alternator adjusting brace.

    WARNING Do NOT use a prybar between the water pump housing and the engine block to separate the two components; this can cause scratches and/or gouges, which can prevent proper sealing.
    1. Pull the water pump off of the engine block. If the water pump is difficult to remove from the engine block, use a soft-faced mallet to tap the water pump housing until it loosens.
    Do not disassemble the water pump; if the water pump is damaged or defective, the entire unit is replaced.
    1. Thoroughly clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces of old gasket material and corrosion.
    To install:
    1. Along with a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine block. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 88-115 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
    2. On 1.3L and TFI 1.6L engines, install two new rubber seals: one between the water pump and oil pump, and the other between the water pump and the cylinder head. The MFI 1.6L engines only use one rubber seal, located between the water and oil pumps.
    1. If removed, install the alternator adjusting brace and the oil level dipstick retaining bolt.
    2. Install the timing belt, tensioner, plate, spring and cover.

    My engine over heated. Is there a problem with the thermostat housing or unit

    Usually when an engine overheats it is caused by:

    1. In town driving and the fan switch on the radiator has failed and the cooling fan will NOT turn on. Check the fan by disconnecting the plug and applying power from the battery + and - to the 2 terminals/ The fan should run. If the fan runs only when you apply power from the battery and not while the car is running then the radiator fan switch is the prime suspect. It can be a fuse... or a relay but usually the problem is the switch itself. It screws directly into the radiator on the back side and will have 2 terminals on it.

    2. The engine coolant thermostat located at the end of the top radiator hose is stuck closed. (Actually it is under the fitting the top hose attaches to on the manifold)

    3. The impeller has falied inside the water pump housing. You can check to see if the impeller is working AFTER you have checked the thermostat. Fill the radiator with water all the way to within about 1/8 inch of the top of the radiator. On a WARM engine start the car and then rev the engine. You should see water flow inside the radiator.
    No flow = bad water pump.

    4. Engine Head gasket is leaking.
    Pull the engine oil dip stick and see if the oil appears milky in color. If it does not look like oil and is milky then the engine head gasket has failed.
    Also with the radiator cap off if you rev the engine and see quite a bit of water pushed out of the radiator then the engine head gasket has failed.

    Those are all standard.. overheating problem checks. Hopefully the overheating incident has not caused other engine damage to your vehicle.

    I went to start my landcruiser today and the filter warning light came on along with a tone?? hzj75

    hi my 79 series does the same thing when the water trap is full in the fuel filter it is easily fixed by loosening the tap at the bottom of the filter housing then pumping the little black nob on top of the housing its about the size of a 10 cent piece this pumps the water out pump until 100% fuel come out then tighten the tap back up hope this helps regards reis

    Can't remove water pump

    Use a paint spatula (Metal) and tap it in between the pump and housing and kep tapping and moveing it in different directions, then go to the other side and do the same, someone may have put silicone on the pump before. if you need more help getting it off let me know and make sure you have ALL the bolts out.

    Engine overheating-----1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.4 liter v/6

    There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck
