The first two steps are correct. A blown fuse can re-route power to some it is not supposed to go. oldgar9's suggestion is worth a try but I suspect it won't help. European cars seem to suffer from this problem more than other manufactures. You should probably sign up on a Mercedes owners forum for more specific help. Another component many be worn out such as a relay and that could be causing the problem. If the brakes stay on while the key is in the run or on position but the motor is not going you could try removing fuses until the brake lights go off to isolate the branch causing the problem.

Where is the fuse panels located? Brake lights are not working

Check the brake light switch atop the brake pedal arm . probably not the fuse . Go to http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html free wiring diagrams . Enter your vehicle info . year ,make , model ,engine size . Then under system click on lighting , then under subsystem click stop lamps . Check wire color into switch an check for B+ voltage . Then press the brake pedal an check for B+ voltage on the out put wire . No voltage coming out with voltage going in .the switch is bad .

I have 1995 jeep wrangler and have no brake lights the tail light fuse is not bad and I changed the brake switch is there another fuse or relay for brake lights

its a brake fuse not the tail park lights.
got trailer wiring hacks on car/ (look)

there are 2 lamps, lamps short.
put in one new lamp, does it work?
y/n
if no , and the new brake lamp switch as 12v on both sides key on and brake pedal reset then the wires are open.
if the voltage reads way low not 12v this line is grounding out.

this is easy to do with and DMM for say $20 , sold at walfart too.

Neither brake light will come on when I get on brake.Changed the fuse and bulbs already. keyless device only work sometimes. Put new CR2016 batteries in. Please help!!!

suspect a bad brake light switch,on the brake pedal itself.the key need not be on when checking the brake light switch.but requires 2 people.one to insure the brake lights come on,one to push the brake. theres a switch on the brake pedal itself. look above the brake pedal pad that you push to apply the brakes. you will see a plunger that moves in and out, just to supply the current to the brakelights.if the plungers out of sync,it will not work. or it may only be stuck.or simply bad,if it moves and brake lights do not work. if the plunger works on visual inspection, and is plugged up,the switch is suspect to be bad. thank you,for choosing fixya.com!! SIMPLE SOLUTION,CHECK THE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. IT MAY ONLY BE BLOWN. UNDER THE DASH ON DRIVERS SIDE CLOSEST TO YOUR LEFT FOOT WHEN APPLYING BRAKES. WITH FLASHLIGHT,CHECK FOR BLOWN BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. if this fails, check for blown brakelight bulbs. unlikely that both brake light bulbs blown at once! but not unusall. thank you for choosing fixya.com!!

Have a 1999 Chev. Suburban. Problem is with brake lights. Top panel (on roof) works but neither side panel works. Replaced circut boards in tail lights, new bulbs, and all fuses are good. What next?

WITH A GOOD FUSE TESTER, TEST ALL THE FUSES FUSEBOX UNDER THE HOOD & INSIDE THE VEHICLE. IF THE FUSES ARE ALL GOOD WITH THE TESTER YOU MUST HAVE A BAD BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR A BAD TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. THE BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT GOES UP THROUGH THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH & THEN TO THE BRAKE LIGHTS. FIRST OF ALL IS THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH GOOD ? THE ORANGE WIRE FEEDS THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, THE WHITE WIRE PUTS POWER TO THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, SO THE LIGHTS CAN BE USED AS TURN LIGHTS OR BRAKE LIGHTS. , PUT A TESTER IN THE WHITE WIRE & PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF THE TEST LIGHT LIGHTS UP, BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS GOOD, BY THE WAY THE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE MAY BE LABELED" STOP", THE FUSE LABELED" BRAKE" IS FOR THE ABS SYSTEM. TO CHECK THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH FOR BRAKE LIGHTS, REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER FROM UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL, PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, PUT THE TESTER IN THE SMALL YELLOW WIRE, THEN THE SMALL GREEN WIRE. IF THERE IS NO POWER IN EITHER WIRE, THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH IS BAD.

I have a 85 omni glh I blew my brake lights out I replaced the fuse but they still don't work , everything elae works on the car except the hazards , are the brake lights and the hazards connected...

yes they are. if your hazard flasher is bad and you happen to have the hazard switch turned on your brake lights wont work
put hazard switch in one position and check brake lights
then put in other position and check them
if they work with the hazard switch in one position leave switch olone and check fuses and put a new flasher for hazard in

Ford f150 2002 has no brake lights

yes there is. Above the brake pedal there is a switch tat turns the lights on when you press the pedal. It is tough to replace due to the lack o room to put your hands. but is an inexpensive part.

2003 Mountaineeer wont shift into Park

There is a shift interlock mechanism that only alows the key to come out in park. It is the same mechanism that will not let you put it into gear unless you put your foot on the brake. You cannot safely bypass it.

Check the Brake light Fuse the key cannot turn if the brakelight fuse is blown because the safety switch is parts of the brake light circuit. also check the brake light switch if the fuse is good and the brake lights do not work.
