Correction......... It takes four cycles for a four cycle engine to run...... Suck, Squeeze, Bang and Blow. 1. Air and fuel is introduced into combustion chamber 2. Compression with ignition from spark plug to ignite compressed air fuel mixture 3. (BANG!) Combustion where the power is made 4. Finally, exhaust
Check all fuses first, then make sure connection to ignition coil(s) is good. May need to pull a spark plug out and dry it off. Connect spark plug back to ignition coil but lay it out where you can see the tip of spark plug. Have someone crack engine for no more than three seconds and observe if there is any spark being emitted from the tip of the spark plug. Be sure to wear eye protection before performing spark test and not to be near spark plug when engine is being cranked. Trust me...... 80 KV's is quite a shocking experience! LOL! Also, make sure you have a fully charged battery before doing this as there is a significant voltage drop that can cause PCM not to function correctly due to below average battery voltage. If there is no spark, you might have a bad ignition module or possible a faulty crank sensor. If you do have spark, you have water in your gas tank in which I've seen this problem occur with people that had just filled up the other day from a water contaminated gas station underground tanks. Hope this steers you in the right direction.

SOURCE: trying to put new spark

Assuming you have a distributer cap/rotor setup are you positive when the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center that the rotor is pointing to the number 1 wire? You could have the order right but the wires on the wrong spots on the distributer. Also, if the cap uses a seperate coil wire, ensure that the coil wire is in place both on the coil and the center of the cap. An easy way to avoid problems like this in the future is to replace the wires one at a time.

SOURCE: Is it hard to change spark plugs in my 2000 Volvo

No. Remove the covers on the top of the heads(straight black covers, usually they say Volvo) and that should give you access to the spark plugs. Plug gap is 0.030".

I replaced starter on 1989 f150 5.0 now have no spark

Mike, Check for diagnostic codes. Check fuses/relays,wires/plugs for pinched, damage or corrosion. Could be a lot of things like distributor armature, cap, rotor, stator, ICM, coil, spark plugs, wires, make sure ground is good to distributor. Use the attached forum links, instruction, guides to help diagnose ignition spark problems, Good luck

2001 volvo s40 cyl 2 misfire how do i repair?

Do a Compression Test, do a VISUAL INSPECTION of the Spark Plugs. If there is a COLOR DIFFERENCE and / or the Spark plugs on Cylinder 1 and 2 are CLEAN. you have a blown head gasket.

I have done so many of these 1.9 liter Turbo's with this same Problem that I can no longer count...

My 1996 850 volvo wont start the engine turns over but wont crank

ok, turning over and cranking are the same thing, what your saying is it won't fire, so , 2 things make a motor fire, electric and fuel, so starting with the easiest remedy , remove the distributor cap, and inspect the rotor and connection points that are inside the cap, check for any debris built up , sometimes you can clean them good enough to get the car to fire up, if it does , normally you would replace them , ( not that expensive) remove the number one cylinder spark plug, and once out put the spark plug wire back on it, ( your going to need help with this step) with insulated pliers , hold the plug and place the bottom of the plug against a grounding point (any bolt on the motor will do,, but try and keep it away from the carb as its Hopefully going to spark) have someone try and turn the car over as if to start it, look for spark at the end of the plug, if you have spark,, replace the plug and try and start the car , if it won't,, move onto the fuel problem, you need to make sure that the car is getting fuel, remove the fuel line to the carb turn the key for a second, you should see fuel splashing out, if yes ,, you should be able to start the car , if no,, check the fuel filter first , then the fuel pump,

1993 volvo 760 getting gas and spark, but still wont start.

Its easy enough to check for spark but how are you checking that you are really getting gas. Are the spark plugs new. If so the check that you have the right ones. It is not uncommon for a parts guy to give you the wrong plugs . If the plugs are not new and the car was running fine with those plugs before all this happened and the plugs look fine now, no bad, black carbon deposits then lets move on . Did you just put gas in the car. sometimes you can get a load of bad gas, I mean water in the gas when I say bad. Been lots of rain lately and this does happen. Pull the plugs on the car and spray some starter fluid down the cylenders. Replace the plugs and turn the engine over. If it fire up for a second or two and then quits, I would start looking at the fuel system. The fuel solinoid relay, which would supply power to the fuel pump could be a problem. Be sure you are getting fuel in the cylenders.

Volvo s40 white smoke and jerking, can it be plug coil problem?

It could be a coil. Or it could be a fuel injector. Also. Record your gas mileage by filling the car up and recording the number of gallons that the gas tank took. Reset the trip odometer and drive as normal. At the next fill record how much fuel again went into the gas tank. divide the gallons of gas at the second fill with the miles driven and that will be your mpg average. If your getting anything lower than 19 it's probably a fuel problem and should be taken to a different mechanic for a second opinion.
