The belt is worn out and is disintegrating. It has probably jumped time. The reason the engine won't start. Depending on your car, Some engines are no tolerance. Meaning if you keep cranking it and the belt breaks, the pistons can slap the valves, bending or breaking them. Replace the belt.

Testimonial: "Hi I mistakenly said its the timming belt its the alternator belt that is faulty but the timming belt is loose thanx for the answer im almost there getting some 1 to check n do the job for me thank you very much"

Have them check for loose or worn pulleys when they get the alternator belt off.

SOURCE: BAD ENGINE NOISE RIGHT AFTER REPLACING TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP

if poor performance was noticed right off the bat, the timing belt is not timed properly. this will cause lack of power, rough idle, pre ignition(little noisey), and rich exhaust.youre going to need to first, find a friend or someone whom you trust to do your automotive work.second youre going to need to start over by tearing it all down systematically and taking note of anything done wrong. third find reliable information on the timing marks for this vehicle. i hope for your sake nothing is broken. let me know how this turns out, ill be happy to help further if you need.

SOURCE: My car is a 1997

Hi, an intermittent poor idle can be caused by certain valves that are perhaps not always closing properly. Three valves I would check are the EGR, purge, and idle air control valve. The EGR valve can get dirty and start to jam. The purge valve sometimes gets charcoal coming thru the line from the vapor cannister, and the charcoal can hold the valve open when it's supposed to be closed. The idle air control valve is the valve that is supposed to control your idle. If it is not opening properly, the car will not idle right. I explain a lot of this in the following post: http://www.fixya.com/cars/r7427423-fix_poor_idle_high_idle_stalling_fuel

On your car, I am not sure which emission controls are installed. If you have evaporative emission laws, you will have a vapor cannister somewhere in the engine compartment. I believe the purge valve is atop the cannister on the Pajero. Pull the hose off to see if there is charcoal in it. Also look inside the valve where you pulled the hose off to see if it is closed.
There are pictures below of the idle air control valve and the EGR valve. The idle air control valve is mounted on the throttle body, near where the cables from the accelerator pedal attach to the engine. Take the valve off and see if it needs cleaning. Also clean out the passages in the throttle body. Use carburetor cleaner to clean these parts. Also clean out the inside throttle body, if dirty.
Finally, if these valves seemed to be OK, take off the EGR valve and clean it out. Make sure it closes by default. If not, replace it. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

2007 Volvo S40 will not start

alternator belt braking would not stall the engine but your dash would of lit up like a christmas tree. you will need to have the engine on an obd reader to see what the problem is. did the belt snap or was it stripped ? alternator over load would cut the engine out check the fuse in the engine fuse box there is 2, 80 amp fuse in there check these are fine.

Volvo s80 t6 after putting my serpintine belt back on when i started the car a good size of the belt ripped of and wrapped around my harmonic balncer to the timming belt and shut my car right down

Did the piece of serpentine belt actually make contact with the timing belt ? The timing belt should have been behind the timing cover.
And does the engine crank normally ? Normal compression ?

Engine won't start distributor won't turn

no your timming belt broke!!! now if you have a interference engine you will need a new car!!!
the only way to know is if you search your year make and engine size of your car..
you better hope its a non interference engine .. than just change the belt.. good luck. this is a basic timming belt photo . engine-start-distributor-turn-rbr12kxjqsqvwnu2khrshnjz-4-0.jpg

I've 1995 eagle talon esi non turbo 2.0 dohe I was driveing it and it stooped running it will turn over but won't start what can Ido

check the timming belt. it sounds like you have broken the timming belt remove the belt cover and make sure that the camshafts are turning when you are cranking the engine, if the belt has broken you will most likly have to remove the cylinder head and replace all the valves, when this engine brakes the timming belt the valves will hit the top of the pistons and bend the valves...good luck

I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra and it backfires and check engine

if the car is back firring the timming is off, which means the timming belt might have jumped. you could have a tentioner going bad and that could be the cause or you might be do for a timming belt, for that modle car they say you should do the timming belt every 60,000. that is where i would start.

a stripped group of cogs on timming belt is most likely ur problem,a new timming belt may not solve ur problem, this is a interference engine ,u may have bent vavles, install timming belt and if it runs, and runs smooth and got plenty of power, then u will be ok

Engine shut off, not getting any fire.

usually if no plugs are firing it would be a crank sensor but in the cam area you have a timing belt that keeps the timing between the crank and the cam if that has broken or stripped then it will not start and may have done some extensive damage to the engine.
