Most rear seats need to be unlatched from the very bottom on each side. Try sliding the driver and passenger seats fully forward. With your back against the front seat press forward toward the trunk on the bottom of the rear seat on one corner at a time near the floor and lift up. This should release the latch. To replace the seat simply slide the seat back into place with the front slightly raised upward and push the seat in toward the trunk then push down til you hear the latch catch.

How do I remove back seat to replace rear struts?

if you have the bolts removed from the seat its a job to move the seat back from the clips that hold it in so you have to move the seat back and this is hard because it will be in there tight once you get it moved back it will come out so you can do the job then good luck on getting it back in its a pain but once you do you should not have any problem getting the bolts back in

NEED TO REPLACE REAR STRUTS HOW DO I GET TO THE STRUT MOUNTS 2001 BMW 740IL

I should not try to answer this as I have never seen the inside of a 2001 740 trunk but..........
I am pretty certain that you will need to pull up the trunk lining and it won't be easy. If you want to do this without damaging the lining, you will probably need to remove other parts, such as the rear deck speakers and likely the rear seat back, to get the lining out.
Or you can just take a box cutter to the lining at the top of the shock tower and glue it back when you are done. Much quicker.
How much do you care about how the inside of the trunk looks? Getting the rear speakers out of a 10-year-old BMW without damaging the speaker grills is tricky as well, and I would be a lot more worried about the appearance of my speaker grills than my shock towers.

On a 1989 nissan maxima with sonar suspension II how do you disassemble the strut assembly? the mounting bracket for sonar adapters is in the way of the strut center bolt.

First you must remove the rear seat to gain access to the top strut mounts. The bottom of the rear seat comes out first. On the 91 model there are two tabs at the base of the seat bottm that you pull forward to release the seat bottom. I'm not sure if the 89 is the same. After removal of the rear seat bottom, you will see a bolt at the bottom of each side of the rear seat back that need to be removed. Fold down the arm rest and disconnect the vinyl cover at the base of the armrest to expose and remove two screws. Push up on the rear seat back to unhook three plastic hooks (center and one at each end) at the top of the rear seat back. Remove the seat back. Remove the large metal support panel that is behind the seat back. Safely jack up the rear of the car and support on jack stands so the rear wheels hang free. Doing one strut at a time, remove the two top strut mount bolts leaving the center strut stud nut in place. The strut and mount will lower out of the unibody. Disconnect the bottom strut mount. Remove the strut/coil spring assembly. Using a strut/spring compressor (some auto parts stores rent these) compress the spring. Carefully remove the top strut stud retaining nut, top strut mount, bumpers and strut boot. Carefully install compressed spring, strut boot, bumpers and top strut mount on new strut and install washer and retaining nut. Reinstall strut and etc. in reverse order.

I need to replace the rear struts and spings on my 01 sable, Where are the top nuts to loosen for the struts

The bolts are located under the rear deck (where the rear speakers are located) inside the car. First start by opening the fold down rear seats. There you will find 4 bolts holding the rear seat back. Remove them. Pull the seat back forward and lay it down on the rear seat. Next remove the rear deck. There are 2 plastic push-in clips that hold the rear deck. They located toward the front. Pull them out. Now the rear deck can be removed by sliding forward towards the front of the car. Under the rear deck is insulation which can be lifted out. Under the insulation are the bolts for each strut. Remove these bolts and the strut can be pulled out.

Replacing boot struts

Hi GB52. Just done this myself, should take 15 minutes perside max. 1/ remove rear seat cushion by bumping the centre back and up, lower the back rests down. 2/ Unscrew the striker plate from the seat side bolster and the bolt at the lower edge of the bolster Removing the bolster takes a bit of fiddling. 3/ use a flat-head screwdriver to release the strut spring clips - use the new ones as a guide. 4/ remove the old strut and fit the new one. reinstall the bolster, bolt and strike plate. note; when replacing the rear seat cushion, ensure the seat belts are fed through first and check that the seat retaining clips properly engage the floor panel brackets.

Hope this helps,

Davo
