Why when I engage the manual side of the j gate of my xk8 1997 model does it lock in high gear with no reverse, and gearbox faultcomes on, it will correct itself if iturn the ignition off then on again, which enables me to use the drive side of the j gate as normal, the transmission has recently been reconditioned but was doing the same thing before it was done. could it be cable adjustment because on the manual side it does not feel positive to me.

Did you correctly diagnose the trans problem in the first place? I think you need to get hold of the installer and see what they did or get a proper workshop manual. Have you a Jag specialist you could talk to? Or is he the one who rebuilt your trans?

You said "Gearbox Fault" comes on. First thing is to hook up a scan code reader (they will do it free at many auto parts stores, e.g. AutoZone) and write down any/all codes. IIRC J-Gate itself only has 2 switches, one tells if you are in park, other is if you are on left (manual) side of gate or Right side (automatic/N/R/Park). I think rest is decided by position of shifter cable but unsure where electronics (switches) for this are - up by shifter, down in / on transmission, or some combination of the two. There is a great forum at JaguarForums.com. Good luck.

SOURCE: GEARBOX WONT GO INTO GEAR

hi from uk could you please give a little more info ? what make/model car ? has this problem occured suddenly? has car been layed up off road some time prior to this unable to select gears ? this problem sounds very much like the clutch drive plate is either stuck to flywheel hence question above ? or it is sticking on primary/spigot shaft for some reason and failing to disengage drive to g/box? how does clutch pedal feel ? you might try selecting 2nd gear with clutch fully pressed and h/brake on then try starting engine if engine starts ?runs then put slight revs on and slip clutch a few times this may work if plate is sticking? if you come back with update may be able to advise further

SOURCE: Transmission acts as if it does not want to engage

gm transmissions are infamous for there transmission failures. and gm refuses to recall them. (I found out from many people and mechanics with the same problem) had been made of cheap metal, and eventually shatters. gm finally made the part from steel on 2003 and later models. go to (my3cents.com) on computer. click on gm complaint 2002 transmission. hope this helps toolman,

What are symptoms of a bad 2019 Renault kwid Amt gearbox Bsch shifter?

what transmission is there, AMT is reverse dead too?

that is a bad clutch or bad clutch slave cylinder connect to TCM..
ooohhhh, ahhhh it is not a manual box (as seen for 100 years
and now the AMT is an automated manual gear box
yes is manual in the guts but no out side.
there is some kind of automatic clutch to that that. no clutch pedal.
There is TCM that does all the shifting and clutching.
the cures are here.
1: check all fuses.
2: scan the PCM for DTC errors
3: get the car serviced in a shop.

2001 audi s4 2.7 manual doesn't go into reverse

Does it feel like it is slack at the gear stick or does it feel like it is trying to engage but can't?
If it is trying the linkages might just need adjusting. Some of that generation Audi still used cable linkages which could stretch.
If it is slack, it could be a shift rod inside the gearbox itself.
Some of the 1.8 models used to lose first, second and reverse because of a broken pin inside the gearbox.

Jaguar s type 03 gearbox fault warning light on dashboard, gear stuck in 4, reverse engages ok, what could it be?

sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times

Citroen jumper gear change

Your description makes me remember an old Austin Metropolitan I had once. The gear linkage was crude and it was possible sometimes to engage two gears at once resulting in a lock-up and a stalled engine. It never happened while driving at speed.

When repairing a gearbox, once the selector linkage has been removed it is usual to select two gears in order to lock the shafts for the tightening or loosening of a retaining nut. There is built into the internal selector linkage an interlock to prevent two gears being selected.

I imagine that interlock in your gearbox is worn or broken...

You can hear my gate motor working, but the gate does not open or close. you can open and close the gate by hand. it is as if the gear does not engage

Your manual override is active. This disengages the gearbox from running the gate. You will need to release the manual override. What make and model gate motor is it?

04 lancer ralliart manual trans, when reverse gear is engaged it ocasionally will only let you reverse for a foot or two and all wheels lock like someone put a wrench in all the spokes. Even going forward...

ask a local mecahnic to have a look ,i suspect a internal fault in the gearbox like the reverse idler catching another gear which is caused by worn selectors but without a drive i couldnt tell you but a local mechanic can

Hi, I have a Triumph Spitfire 1500. There is no gate between the forward gears and reverse. Can anyone help me identify the fault? Thanks John

Hi, do you know if it is a single rail or 3 rail box? The single rail has the gearlever coming out of the tail housing ( and the reverse spring below the lever on the l/h/side sometimes replaced by the reverse light switch) the 3 rail box has an extension housing holding the gear lever, bolted on with 4 studs to the gearbox. this has a detent on the gearbox top plate.

Transmission is stuck in reverse but the shifter is in neutral and will not go in gear

Check for wear in the gear lever selector/gate mechanism.
It may have allowed the lever to select reverse, the 'jump' the lockout gate back to neutral position for selection of forward gears.
You may be able to de-select reverse if you access the lever directly at the gearbox case.
