Hi Carl,

This sounds like bearing issues in the transmission. Your description sounds like counter shaft. 4th gear is straight through, so likely some less noisy.
SO, you could go through the trans, but this gets cost prohibitive real fast. Only takes one gear and then another then too much cost.

If you are not capable in rebuilding the trans, consider a used transmission. Much less cost, but some risk if the trans is not good...

SOURCE: automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd gear (limp mode)

most newer vehicles  have transmission control modules, that go to a default of 2nd or 3rd gear when they go bad!  I had a 91 plymouth stuck in 3rd gear because of this module! could be your problem!    when mine went out, it smelled like something electrical burned inside the the passenger cabin! I would check all the electrical connections on the transmission first    good luck

Is it missing reverse 2nd and 4th? If so it has a broken reverse reaction shell. They aren't too hard to replace

You have a 4L60E whick is controled by your ECM. It sounds like you need and new transmission, the sun gear in it has failed and is the weak point on this transmission.
When you get a new transmission have them to a corvette servo upgrade. The part is only $45.00 and the shop should know about the upgrade. It will make your truck shift a lot more firmer but last longer.
Here is a write up http://s-series.org/component/option,com_tech_article/Itemid,/item,6/task,item/
Good luck and hope this helps

Transmission making clicking noise when in gear and won't move

If your transmission is making a clicking noise when in gear and is not moving, it could be indicative of a serious problem. Here are a few potential causes to consider:

  1. Transmission fluid: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low fluid levels or dirty/deteriorated fluid can cause inadequate lubrication and lead to transmission issues. If the fluid is low, you may have a leak that needs to be addressed.
  2. Clutch or torque converter: If you have a manual transmission, a faulty clutch could prevent power from being transferred effectively from the engine to the transmission. In an automatic transmission, a malfunctioning torque converter can cause similar symptoms. A slipping or worn-out clutch or torque converter may require replacement or repair.
  3. Broken or worn gears: Internal components of the transmission, such as gears or synchros, may be damaged or worn out. This can cause the transmission to make clicking or grinding noises and result in a loss of power transmission.

My ford bantam 1300 doesn't want to select 3rd gear

this manual transmission?
seems. so
the tip of shift levers love to get worn and not allowing the shift rail forks to hit 3rd gear.
a pure simple mechanical failure and is shifter tip end parts bad, some are even made of plastic.
or
3rd gear synchro- ring is super worn out and the main clutch drags. (seen it and fixed them)
if clutch has master cylinder is the fluid always at top line or drops in time every weak.

My car starts just replaced an altenator belt and now the car wont shift into gear is making a grinding noise

Presumably manual transmission.

Car probably won't go into gear because the clutch is stuck or won't clear.

There is no obvious connection between the alternator belt and the clutch unless perhaps being careless in the engine compartment the clutch hydraulic pipe or cable adjustment got damaged.

98 Jeep Wrangler will shift when off but not while running makes grinding noise.

There is something wrong with the clutch. Make sure that there is enough clutch fluid in it. For some reason the clutch isn't disengaging like it should, so you are grinding the gears in your transmission, making that awful noise. You want to get it looked at before you ruin your transmission by stripping the gears.

Clutch problems

Hi bosslady15,

First of all I think I should say that clutches do not make grinding noises - but transmission gears do.
However, a clutch that is not disengaging properly can make the gears grind when trying to shift from one gear to the next. Also a common source of noise is the clutch throwout bearing. This will make a "grinding" or "growling" noise any time the clutch pedal is depressed. In either of these cases, the only solution is to replace the clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate and pilot bushing. These all usually come in a clutch kit. If you have an hydraulic clutch with an internal slave cylinder it is recommended to replace the slave cylinder as well and also the flywheel on on vehicles. I'm sorry I cannot be more specific because you did not mention what type of vehicle we are talking about here.

Reverse gear has grinding noise...?

Have them flush the fluid out under warranty and put in new fluid, and have them bleed the clutch lines in case air is getting in there. Audi and VW claim lifetime transmission fluid but it's BS - I've changed relatively low mile fluid from these cars and it was horrendous. It's possible that the fluid itself is causing trouble, but it's more likely that it is a synchro problem. If it was a clutch issue, you should have problems with more than just reverse gear - a clutch simply engages and disengages the engine and transmission, regardless of which gear it is. The problem (if not fixed by fluid) is in the transmission, and being under warranty, don't accept another "suggestion" like they're giving you. Changing your clutch isn't gonna do it.
