An old friend taught me bout this very simple to fix
Turn key to ingnition on apply break pump twice check gear throw ineutral
Now if still hasnt loosened use a friend or another vehicle to bump car just bump once bump apply brake shift gear
Its all bout what gear you shut off in
Remove the gear shift boot and look down below to see if the linkage has snagged itself. If not then you will have to get at the trans end by diving down the back of the engine. You may need an assistant to waggle the stick while you try and work out where its snagged. I take it the trans oil level is OK? You don't have any oil leaks, in which case its possible the 4th gear hub has seized.

can you look under the vehicle at the transmission, look on top, do you see any linkages? I'm not sure you will, just want to check.
The 5 sp trans that is in the Ford Explorer is normally a "top loader" meaning that the shift linkage is internal to the transmission, if this is so, while your looking do see an access plate in the floor board above the transmission, if not to repair it you will have to remove it. if you are not comfortable with this procedure, I recommend that you find a quality repair shop in your area.

Will it come out of gear with the engine shut off? When you were having trouble getting it into gear was it with the engine running? If you answered yes to either, or both questions then you likely have a clutch problem; faulty clutch assembly or slave and/or master cylinder. If the problem occured with the engine off then you have internal transmission trouble.

Check the linkage under the vehicle, if it is still connected then your problem is the portion in the transmission and it will need to be rebuilt. If the linkage is disconnected or broken you will need to repair it to fix your problem.
This is often a switch located on the brake pedal lever. The car requires you to press the Brake pedal before shiftting out of Park. You lose the signal when a foot hits or breaks this part. Look under the dash for the part and fix it.
