Why can't I pull the plug wire off the plug on the back of the engine

Okay, a miss or a misfire can be fuel, or ignition, or a compression problem with the cylinder or cylinders affected. First narrow it down to which cylinders are missing. Without a scan tool to communicate with the engine computer, you will have to do field tests, so to speak, the old fashioned way. (I hope you are not averse to mild electrical shock, because it can happen frequently to novice home mechanics, till they learn ways to avoid it. A few shocks teaches fast.) So you have a miss and the engine is idling, hood up, in park or with brake set: If you pull off a spark plug wire from a good running cylinder, the engine will stumble worse, maybe stall, but the rpm's will certainly lower. If you pull off a wire from the cylinder that is missing, see, the idle speed won't change. The rpm's of the engine will still be the same, same noise, same miss, but now you know where it is coming from. Keep doing this to all cylinders until you are sure where the miss is from, just one cylinder (maybe injector, bad spark plug, or plug wire, or ignition coil, or low compression in that cylinder), or if more than one cylinder (again, check all the same for a gas problem, or an ignition spark problem, or a compression problem).

Before you start working around the engine while running, make preparations in advance: With the key off, pull each spark plug wire from its plug. Grab and twist the boot back and forth and pull only by the rubber boot, never by the wire, Get each one easy to pull off and reattach. If in good shape and pliable they should be easy to pull off and push back on until the snap is heard-when the cable end snaps over the top of the spark plug. When you pull the wire off with the engine running, quickly move the end of the wire to a metal surface, so the spark will go there to ground and won't give you a shock. Wear a heavy glove for added safety, if you wish. I suppose you could shut the engine off, so key is off, each time you want to pull the wire from one plug, then start back up and listen if the engine speed has changed. That might work, but it will be very apparent, easier to find, on a running engine if you pull off a wire from a good firing cylinder and hear the change in engine speed. Well, good luck.

• No, the plug wires pop right up. They do sort of melt if left on there for a very extended time. So you may have to get some long needle nose pliers and work the plugs loose.

• A tip for the three plugs in the rear. If you remove the mount bolts off the front motor mounts (the bolts on the mounts by the front of the engine) you can rock the engine forward and get to the back three plugs / wires easy. I like to use a ratchet strap and hook onto the back of the engine with one side and anchor the other side to the front mount first. Then remove the two bolts.Then bring the engine forward.

There will be 6 spark plugs. 3 at the front of the car between the engine and the radiator. 3 on the other side of the engine close to the firewall. You can follow the spark plug wires to locate each plug. The engine is transverse mounted, or sideways. It can be difficult to plugs on this type of engine because of clearance problems. I use a special spark plug socket that is extra long. Instead of using a ratchet wrench, I use a 7/8 inch ratcheting box end wrench on the socket. The socket has a rubber insert to hold on to the plugs after they have been removed from the engine. Be careful when removing the spark plug wire. They get stuck on the plugs, and pulling on the wire will damage it. If you don't have a tool designed for removing spark plug wires, twist the boot, or the big end of the plug wire that slips over the end of the spark plug. Once is is loosened up, you can pull it off the spark plug. Pull on the boot, never the wire. Only remove one wire at a time to avoid getting the wires crossed. To install the plugs, get a 6 inch length of rubber vacuum hose that will fit tightly on the end of the spark plug. Use this as a handle to install the spark plug into the engine. Once the spark plug is threaded in to the engine, pull the hose off the end of the plug and use the socket and ratcheting wrench to finish tightening.

1. Pull the hood release lever located under the dashboard.

2. Walk around to the front of the car, reach under the hood, find the latch and squeeze it. Open the hood.

3. Find the spark plugs, located in a row along one side of the engine (on an in-line four-cylinder engine) and attached to thick wires, called spark plug wires. Cars with V-shaped engines (which can have four, six or eight cylinders) will have spark plugs and spark plug wires on both sides of the engine.

4. Change one spark plug at a time, always putting the plug wire back on before changing the next spark plug.

5. Pull off one spark plug wire where it attaches to the plug. There is a little rubber boot at the plug end of the wire; pull on this part. Pulling higher up on the wire can damage the spark plug wire and cause it to separate.

6. Blow or wipe away any dirt or debris around the spark plug. You do not want anything to fall into the cylinder while the spark plug is out.

7. With the spark plug socket and a ratchet, remove the spark plug by turning it in a counterclockwise direction. You may need an extension for your ratchet if the spark plugs are deep-set or not directly accessible. Ratchets with flexible heads are especially helpful for hard-to-reach spark plugs.

8. Check the spark plug to make sure it needs replacing. A good spark plug should be lightly coated with greyish brown deposits. If heavy deposits are present, if the spark plug is black or if the electrode or core nose are damaged, the plug needs to be replaced.

Grab a spark plug wire by the base of the wire and pull the wire up and out of the engine. (You may need to wiggle it back and forth while pulling up on it to get it out of the engine.)

Trace the wire back to the power distributor and pull the spark plug wire off the distributor. Make a note of the plug orientation.

Install the new plug wire in the place of the removed one. Match the new wire with the old one to make sure they have the same size. Press the plug wire over the distributor electrode and onto the spark plug firmly, so that the ends are secure. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.

Repeat the above procedure for all the other spark plug wires. It is best to change all the spark plug wires at the same time.

Hi. Here's the procedure on how to change the spark plugs.

Step 1 Connect the spark plug socket to the socket extension.

Step 2 Open the hood and pull the spark plug wires off the top of the engine. You may need to wiggle them back and forth while pulling up on the plug wires in order to remove them.

Step 3 Lower the spark plug socket into the engine and push the socket over the top of the spark plug.

Step 4 Turn the spark plug counterclockwise with a socket wrench to loosen and remove it from your Sienna's engine.

Step 5 Pull the old spark plug out of the socket and insert a new spark plug into the socket with the electrodes facing out.

Step 6 Lower the spark plug into the engine and thread and tighten the spark plug.

Step 7 Slide the plug wire down into the plug well and push it over the top of the spark plug until it seals the plug. The wire should fit nice and snug over the spark plug.

HAVE YOU REPLACED THAT PLUG AND PLUG WIRE,FIND NO3 CYLINDER AND PULL THAT WIRE OFF SEE IF ILDE OF ENGINE CHANGES IF NO THEN YOU MAY HAVE BIGGER PROBLEM BUT DEFINITELY CHECK FOR SPARK WITH WIRE ON PLUG ITSELF.
