When attempting to start the gear selector sticks in the park position. It is expensive to repair, a big job?
Check the switch above the brake pedal, if you press the brake you should hear the solenoid under the gear stick click. If it clicks and the gear lever is still stuck try spraying WD40 into the small part of the 'J' gate. On my last Sovereign, if I didn't push the brake before I turned the ignition key it would jam up. I all else fails, unscrew the gear knob, take out the ashtray and under the bottom of the 'ski slope' you'll find two plastic wing nuts, undo them and you can then gently lift out the veneered cover off the console and you will find the locking solenoid in the left hand top corner, it might just need greasing. Good luck
I presume this is a x300 series, you should hear a click from the gear selector area when you press the brake pedal with the ignition on, if not the park release soleniod is not working, the common cause of this is the brake pedal switch faulty, you can manualy release it by removing the little star shaped plug near the gear lever and inserting a small object like a screwdriver or your key, then select N and start engine,

It is mounted to the body in front of the tank. You will find it on the driver's side behind the rear tire.
SOURCE: jaguar xj6 not starting
Yes you can check the Crank & Cam Sensors they can control spark and fuel. You can test them by finding out the normal resistance and then testing yours for their resistance. Do you have a way to scan the car? Did it quit while driving?
