I change the plugs which looked good. No trouble codes detected with scanner. Cleaned the oxygen sensor and MAF sensor. Put fuel injector clean in gas x 2 plus added Marvel Mystery Oil to gas. No change. Compression check was normal. Air filter new. Suggestions please. I bought truck recently and do not know if these engines have a history except I did replace the AC blower resistor and plug. Mileage 80K.

you should change the tps( throtal position sensor) this can cause that problem

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

Sounds Like your o/2 is bad, are you burning e-8, try adding some injector cleaner/seafoam, and put a tank of preimu gas in then reset the code.

sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.

FYI, I figured it out and fixed it. There is a rubber tube/hose leading from the engine oil vent, where PCV valves once were, leading into the air box. The hose was cracked and apparently was leaking enough vacuum to cause the problem. Ordered the hose from E-bay and saved about 2/3 over dealer price. Later found out this is a common problem with the 4 cyl and 5 cyl version of these motors.
