How does a fan blow apart while in park?

Have a RR 98, 4L SE. It was sitting in a storage lot for about 6 months due to some legal and registration issues. We went to the lot yesterday to pick it up. The battery was dead. We put gas in it and get someone to jump us. Starts first turn of the key after about 3 to 5 mins charging. Let it idle for the next hour and some while the storage guys figured out how to get the busted car in front of it out of the way. I drive it up and down the highway for about an hour and head to work. Sounds fine except that the brakes feel a little rough and need to be checked. Hand the car off to my father who drives it home, which probably took 20 mins. He tells me the engine sounds fine. He picks up my brother and they head to the mechanic for a tune-up to make sure everything is kosher since it's been sitting there for so long. They changed the fluid and filters. They tell me after they leave the mechanic and drive around for about ten minutes the check engine oil light come on and a faint knocking starts. My dad drops my brother off after this and comes to get me from work so we can go back to the mechanic. He's parked next to truck lot at my job and I'm walking through it toward him when I hear what sounds like a gunshot come from the car. My dad turns it off and jumps out. There's fluid and plastic all over the floor underneath and when we pop the hood the fan blades are either on the floor or sitting atop the engine. The power steering reservoir is separated from the hose and fan clutch doesn't have a single blade left on it. The hose on top leading to the radiator is severed at the base. The plastic covering for the fan is also in pieces. There's also another hose which is torn in half but I'm not sure where it goes. We call a tow truck. The car still starts and runs but we don't want to take risk of attempting to drive it anywhere. We tow it back to the shop. This morning I go when they open up and start trying to figure out what went wrong. One mechanic tells me that the fan clutch was bad. The owner told me that the fan wasn't aligned. Another mechanic says the car was sitting too long so there was no way to know. I'm trying to figure out how that happens and need another opinion. Thanks for your time. I have pictures of the damage if anyone needs to see it.

Fans are notorious for work-hardening. I have lost 2 of them, both making holes in the bonnet when they exploded. Replacing the fan assembly is no big deal but do get the viscous coupling checked and/or replaced at the same time.

Depending on where you are located, a good second hand unit should be available from a Land Rover shop - forget the dealers.

Do NOT drive the vehicle until this is fixed - or you likely damage the engine by overheating

SOURCE: overheating after about 20 mins running

I've had the same problem, twice!

The solution is 2 fold:
1. Replace the filler cap on the overflow bottle, the genuine RR part works best;
2. Replace the 'O' Rings on the heater matrix under the dash. This last is quite a fiddly job, go to www.rangerovers.net for full details on how to do it. If you take the vehicle to a RR dealer they want to charge huge amounts of money because they replace the entire heater box not just the 'O' rings.

Good luck

SOURCE: electric problems

Your problem Is simple and easy.  Its the Positive and Negative Terminals that connect to your battery. I would bet the case Is that your Terminals are old POS that no longer conduct.  Hit your local auto parts store and buy some new Terminals.  Get something that Is a strong Conductor.  I suggest Brass.  Also Its Important to get the right size Terminal.  I would also put money on your Main Power Wires being real heavy gage that will not fit into a generic Terminal.  So make sure you get a terminal your gage of wire will easily fit into to avoid head ache and the hacking of your nice heavy gage Into lets say Civic gage to fit a too small terminal which mind your will work However you will have  less power weaker connections ultimately Find your self with a car that will not start.  It does not  hurt to also sand any white crude or rust that would further interupt your new connection,  Complete that and she be ready to fire up and hand you your next task.
Good Luck,

When I'm sitting at a light, the RPMs will surge as high as 4k sometimes, then back down. It happens if I'm parked and in gear as well.

Clean Throttle Body and MAF with cleaner. It is sticking open due to carbon build up. Also put a bottle of Fuel System Cleaner into half a tank of gas.

The ac compressor in my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado turns on and off while parked. It's blows really cold air while driving, but blows hot and cold air while parked. To hot to sit in truck while parked. ...

the problem is not the compressor but the head pressure is to high and the high pressure switch is shutting it off
You say really cold while driving but on/off when stationary
That indicates that the fan in front of the condenser is not working and the high pressure gas is not converting back to liquid
2 possible items to check
fan--fan relay fan relay fuse
and excessive gas in the system
take it to an accredited ac specialist shop and have the pressures checked
At this point I am thinking excessive gas

My passat was sitting in a tow yard for 3 months it was working fine before it got towed. Now I replaced the battery and put half tank of gas. the car doesn't start but it cranks. WHAT COULD BE THE ...

After 3 months it is possible the fuel pump has seized up due to the fuel going bad. As of 2 years ago, fuel has a storage life of around 90 days. If the fuel had ethanol in it when it was stored, this fuel stratifies in the tank and the water content sinks to the bottom also ruining the in tank fuel pump.

It is also possible other components may have failed coincidentally and you will need a scanner to pull the codes stored in the ECU to see if other sensors have failed.

When electronic loaded vehicles sit until the battery goes flat.... it induces a lot of false codes as the system awakes and then goes back to sleep because of low voltage fluctuations as battery looses it's voltage.

The ground clamp should be removed from the battery before late model vehicles are put in long term storage to prevent electronic code scrambling .

Call the manufacturer and see if there are any service intervals for it. As all thing mechanical need service over time parts wear.

Also look for obvious signs of wear and broken parts underneath.
