Why wont my 1998 Chevy Malibu start?

The battery is charged. It has fuel. It cranks, but wont turn over. Sounds like the fuel pump is working.

SOURCE: my 1998 chevy blazer has been having starting

the only way to know for sure is to test fuel pressure. The test port is on the fuel pressure line on the back side of the motor near the distributor. You should have at least 57 psi of fuel pressure. Anything less and it will not start.

If you have no fuel pressure than you'll want to check for power of the fuel pump. You should be able to find a spot where you can access the harness as close to the fuel pump as possible. You'll want to probe the large diameter grey wire. It should have power for 3-5 seconds as soon as you turn the key on and anytime the key is in the start position.

Another thing you can try is spraying a little carb spray down the throttle body. If it starts and runs than this is a classic sign of low fuel pressure. The injector poppets require high fuel pressure to open when you start the vehicle. When the vehicle is running the poppets are under vacuum and require less pressure to work.

SOURCE: my chevy malibu wont start.

Hey Debbie. When a car wont start, there can be many things that can cause this. It can get real frustrating real quick. I will give you some things that it may be. If you are good at cars, you need to test for fuel and spark. Make sure fuel is going to the engine and make sure your ignition is sparking. If you are not good on cars, check these. Make sure your fuel pump is kicking on when you first turn the key. You should hear a humming sound for a second or two. If you do, the pump is working. If not, it may be bad. If you haven't changed the fuel filter in a long time, it may be clogged. A filter is cheap, usually 10-20 dollars. A fuel pump is 100-200 dollars. Check your air filter and make sure the engine is getting air. The filter may be clogged/real dirty. You could check the fuel pump fuse/relay, only if you didn't hear the pump. Your timing belt may have broke. You need to spray starter fluid into your carburetor. You will have to take off the air hose to do so. Once you spray it in, try to start the car. If it starts and dies, you have a fuel issue. If it stays the same and doesn't start, you will have to check the ignition system. This included the spark plugs/coils, distributor, dist.cap, rotor, cam sensor , crank sensor, ecm. I know it is a lot to take in but it could be any of these. Let me know if you know the engine good. There are things you can check, if you know how to check them. The only way to check for the problem is by checking each possibility. If you have a question Debbie, let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

HOW CAN I CHECK MY FUEL PUMP TO SEE IF IT GONE BAD BECAUSE MY CAR WANT CRANK....

Even if the fuel pump is bad it wont prevent the car from cranking. If the fuel pump is bad the car will still crank, it just wont start. If the car won't crank you need to first check the battery and battery connections. If the battery is charged and the connections are good then you need to check the fuses and make sure none are blown. If all good then you need to make sure power is getting to the starter. If it is then you may have an ignition problem. It's definitely an electrical problem, not a fuel problem.

2002 chevy malibu won't start

Does the starter make any noise or click when you turn the key to start? If it does not, chk. battery could be bad, and battery cables could be loose or corroded. If there good and clean and battery is good try tapping starter see if it will turn and start if it does or still clicks starter bad. It could be ignition switch if it does nothing at all, but if it clicks most likely its starter.
