It really depends upon whether its a metallic grinding or a plastic/rubber grinding noise. If the front end of the car dives when breaking, the wheel can rub on the inside of the wheel well. That could mean severly worn shocks/struts.
It could mean a bad wheel bearing, quite rare.
It could mean really bad tie rod ends or bad upper/lower A-frame bushings and the tire is going somewhat sideways. But then the vehicle would pull to one side pretty severely.
And also it could be bad CV joints, which make all sorts of grinds and clicks and pops, especially when going from reverse to drive and back again, and pops on turns, especially a turn with a bump, like pulling into a driveway.
You really need someone to take a good look at it. I read recently a suggestion that you take it to one person to inspect it, and another to repair it. That way, the inspector has nothing to gain by suggesting that you replace things that are not bad, just to run up the bill.

SOURCE: 2001 corolla parking brake light on . Rear brakes making a rubbing noise

I would think that your parking brake cables and/or the park brake pivots may be seized. It appears that your rear brakes are being kept on by one or both of the abovementioned problems.

SOURCE: front right wheel bearing and break pads

Nope. 90% chance its your caliper pins. the caliper is required to float. When you remover the caliper by the two pins or whatever your application they require lube. if one is bent or seized the caliper wont float, the pads or pad will continue to wear because the caliper wont return to "neutral" location when the piston no longer has pressure on it. locate these pins and lubricate them with a graphite grease or something like lubriplate or similar. if the pins are bent remove them and replace. they're pretty cheap. good luck

SOURCE: disabling faulty abs breaks. Will car still pass mot?

If there is only one sensor faulty you should be able to replace that one.If for any reason one abs wheel sensor cannot connect to the abs system reader it stopes working. It means your brakes working just as fine but the Anti Block System is not functioning anymore.Your car will certainly pass the mot without ABS.

SOURCE: I have a 94 Camry.

Hi R,
If I understand correctly the sound you're describing could be something known as 'pinking' It occurs when the ignition timing is too far advanced and can damage the engine. Make sure that you're using the correct octane rated fuel in your vehicle and thereafter take it for a tune. Whoever does it, should set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC. To set the timing correctly, open the diagnostic socket in the engine compartment which when standing facing the front of the car will be on your right and the vehicles left. Open up the cover and bridge between T and E1 (A small directory is inside the same cover, which will help you find the correct connections) Only when the bridge is connected can the ignition timing be set correctly. This should be carried out with a strobe timing light with the engine running.

How to unglaze glazed drum breaks

Rear Drums & shoes should be changed at the same time. The same goes for the front pads & rotors. Usually the drums & rotors are pre-cut but I ask at the counter if they need cutting because I have ended up with uncut squealers once or twice and found the drum needed to be re-cut due to minute warp-age. If the grinding is the same as before the brakes were changed then all th e brakes need changing not just the ones you thought needed it. Quiet pads & brakes have a beveled edge instead of an abrupt 90 degree angle. Ceramics tend not to squeak. As for un-glazing, in the old days we ran 60 grit sand paper along the wear surface until it was sufficiently scuffed to stop the squeal. It didn't work for very long & usually the squeal worked itself out with wear in a week or 2. good luck.

Most likely your rear brake shoes are worn down far beyond the min limits and you now have metal to metal contact, which causes the grinding noise, overheating and poor braking. You most likely will need to replace the drums. The other rear wheel will probably be the same.

Front end grinding noise

Several possibilities. Sound transmits through metal. The rear Emergency brakes will lose their lining and the linings fall into the rear brake drum. They will often pulverize the material and the piles of debris will shift when backing up and repeat the process going forward.
Rust on the front rotors. Constant battle. Can rust in 3 days enough to make noise. Sticking caliper or rubber brake hose is breaking down inside and blocking brake fluid return. Fluid has pressure to tighten caliper but relies on gravity/suction return. Rubber brake hoses internally can form flaps which act like 1 way gates.
Check other front axle for same parts, maybe 1/2 shaft is failing.

What is the grinding noise on my 2003 Grand am front wheels, help please?

There are many things the grinding noise can be. I would start with the breaks though as that sounds like the most likely culprit. If they are grinding, odds are you have ruined your rotors and/or drums. This means that you are looking at about $50-$70 in new parts per wheel (Total of $200 to $280) to replace, assumming only the pads and rotors/drums needs to be replaced.

Please note that breaks can be a good DIY project, but this takes an intermediate skill level with some expereince. Some vehicles are easier than others. Drum style breaks can be especially tricky as they relie on a system of springs that can be challenging to work with. There is also a hydrulic system that can have issues. If you see break fluid when you take off the wheels and drums, you have much larger issues and I would recommend getting in touch with someone more qualified.

Grinding noise front end.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

Makes a grabbing or rubbing niose in the rear of my truck

Hello, and thank you for choosing fixya.com. You may need a new seal in the rear differential, new u-joints on the driveline(s) - NOTE: when a noice is coming from a source that is metal, the noise may travel, so while it may sound like it is in one place, it may be in a completly different place. You mentioned you had your brakes checked/changed as well. You may want to make sure that the drums in the rear (if it has drum brakes) were checked with a caliper for wear depth. I hope this information is useful and helps you. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com.
