Where is the location of cruise control sensor on 2000 mercury cougar

Speedometer quit working on 2000 mercury cougar v6. I got the code for speedometer sensor malfunction. found it on transmission bare wires and they were touching. Put a new sensor on. Still no speedometer. I checked all fuses I could check in fuse boxes under the hood and under driver's side dash. None bad. Is there any fuses. You would think so since there is wires running to the speedo sensor. I read that the cruise control sensor could also cause this. If so where is it located. Where would fuse be for cruise control sensor. Nothing marked for either sensor. Any info? Thanks Chris

I had the same problem and the flasher is not located in the fuse box because it is not a normal flasher. the cougar has an electronic flasher unit that is located on the left side of the center console. the best and cheapest place to order a new one is amazon.com. they run about $30-$40

SOURCE: Rear Signal Malfunction

Just take out the globe and replacing them or spray some wd40 inside the connections and see if they work.

SOURCE: turn signal does not work

HI. Click here to view a troubleshooting page, that will help isolate the issue. The likely culprit will be the Flasher.

The flasher unit can be found under the dash panel attached to a bracket on the right side steering column opening reinforcement. On some models, the flasher plugs into the fuse panel.

The flasher can be removed by pressing the plastic retaining clip and pulling straight rearward. Align the new flasher housing with bracket and push forward until it snaps into the bracket

Click Here to view the fuse box layout picture.

The mounting of the fuse panel is either on the left side of the passenger compartment, under the dash, on the side kick panel or on the firewall to the left of the steering column. Certain models will have the fuse panel exposed while other models will have it covered with a removable trim cover.

1999 mercury tracer

You have a speed sensor in the side of the transmission that may have failed. Normally you would have a check engine light on with a trouble code for it too.
The sensor would need to be tested.

What would cause it to work one day and not the next(cruise control) and where is the speed sensor located

I don't have any advice on the cruise control, it would have to be checked out.
The same speed sensor on the transmission handles the cruise control and the speedometer. If it fails, the speedo would quit working and the check engine light would come on.

How do I fix the cruise control on my 1987 Mercury Cougar?

Is it behind the fender liner? You have to take that off, they often put things there.

2002 merc villager speedometer doesn't work, tach OK

The speedometer is electronic and controlled by a micro processor, the needle is operated by a special DC electric motor called a "stepper" motor, this little motor can cause this problem as well as the Vehicle speed sensor on the transmission (see photo below), either part can cause the problem, the cruise not working would lead me to believe the speed sensor is defective, but you should have a Check Engine light on and a fault code for the sensor, do you have either? Autozone and others do the fault code test for free, ask for an OBD2 fault test. Here is the picture of the sensor I mentioned.

Cruise Control is not working

Make sure your brake light are functioning properly. Some CC use the brake light circuit to release. If there is a bad bulb cruise won't work.
