I have a 2000 toyota Echo and in left turns the steering stops working and the car drifts or slides until i press on the brake and it regains steering control. Whats going on? This happens only occasionally and not constantly.
Have the front end steering joints and suspension checked by an accredited front end specialist. Check the wheel bearings and cv joints for serviceability. Although you say it is only occasionally it is a critical issue as on any occasion it may place you or others in harms way.
Testimonial: "The ball joints are tight and the front end is not loose or wandering on its own. The steering just fails to respond to the wheel input occaisonaly. Maybe the steering power assisted rack is bad?"
have the valve body checked in the rack and pinion unit of the steering as there may be contaminant affecting the seating of a directional valve. I did suggest a specialist front end shop but with you latest input I now recommend an accredited steering specialist shop for valve check and pressure test
thank you for your insights

SOURCE: 2001 Toyota Echo Fuel consumption
EPA mileage figures are estimates, and seldom does it have anything to do with the real world, My new car is rated at 19 city and 28 hiway, it gets 22 MPG max. The only thing you can do is make sure the pressure in the tires is correct and run the recommened oil, keep the car in good running order.
SOURCE: 1998 Camry steering wheel shakes when braking and over 50mph
if you hit the brakes and it shakes its your rotors, they're probably warped. Having them turned (polished) won't fix it. You'll have to replace them. As for the shaking at over 50, if you're not touching the brakes, you'll probably just need to have your tires balanced. Maybe jack up you car an check the ball joints and tie rod ends (keep the tire on and see if there is play, either up and down (ball joints) and left and right (tie rods)). Hope this helps.

well the belt could be loose or the compressor may be seized.....or the belt may be old and squealing.
SOURCE: 2009 Corolla steering problem
I had this "problem" but there wasn't anything wrong with the car - it was just my driving...
The steering is just sensitive and "sporty" - try driving with a much lighter hand - even one hand, lower on the wheel. I now find the steering great and its actually very responsive.
It took 3 visits to Toyota before someone finally explained this to me but it works. People kept explaining that it "drives like a Corolla" but couldn't tell me how to drive it better.
Mind you the car is still horrible on windy days but I don't have same issues in normal highway driving.
A year ago I was actually renting cars for road trips instead of driving my 09 Corolla S I was that freaked out about the steering but I'm now completely comfortable driving the car. I do have to warn everyone that drives my car on the highway though...they never believe me at first but always concede that I'm right and that a light hand makes a huge difference.
