You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. If needed, you can pull back the weather seal (can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to access everything inside the door

Coupe

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the screw covers, screws and pushpin, then remove the door pull handle applique.
  3. If equipped, unplug the regulator switch plate electrical connector.
  4. Mark the position of the window regulator handle, then remove the handle using a suitable tool to disengage the regulator handle snapring.
  5. Remove the pushpins from the trim panel.
  6. Slide a flat-bladed tool behind each of the retaining clips and twist to disengage the clips from the door shell.
  7. Remove the trim panel by lifting it up and sliding it rearward to clear the sheet metal.

Remove the door pull handle applique

If equipped, unplug the regulator switch plate electrical connector

Remove the two-piece pushpins from the trim panel

To install:
  1. Replace all damaged trim panel retainers.
  2. If removed, install the water shield.
  3. Place the trim panel into position on the door and insert the door handle through the opening.
  4. Attach the door panel fasteners.
  5. Install the pushpins on the trim panel.
  6. Install the regulator handle.
  7. If equipped, attach the regulator switch plate electrical connector.
  8. Install the door pull handle applique cover, the screws, screw covers and the pushpin.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

open the other rear door and lift up on the bottom edge of the back seat to remove it.
this should allow you access to the door trim panel.

locate screws remove them take a flat screw driver slide between door pannel and door and pry where the clpis are holding.....if bmw audi volkswagen will need star keys to remove

Mercedes estate automatic rear load cover

I had this problem with my E280 CDI (2007)
I coincidentally charged the battery and it now works. This may be nothing to do with it but the MB service dept did msay that some functions fail before others if the battery is flat.
