Most likely it uses R-12. If it was converted to R-134A, it would have at least 1 sticker (usually 2 stickers) indicating a conversion to R-134A was done. The sticker would be on the chassis and would be visible as soon as you open the hood. There could be another on the low side AC line where the charge valve is.

A/C Compressor Compatible with r134a?

Yes, you can buy a small kit with the adapter fittings and use R134. You can not add R134 if the system has R12 in it now.

A/c does not work

The first thing you need to check is that the AC system has a charge and it hasn't leaked out, that can happen very quickly on this old of a car. Have a set of special AC gauges hooked up by a shop to determine the systems charge level. If it is low or gone then you will need to find the leak, this takes a special tool in many cases called a gas leak detector. Your system uses R12 type freon and it is no longer produced for environmental reasons, so you must buy and install a retrofit kit to use the new R134 refrigerant, doing this right is quite time invloved and expensive. When all is said andone you will likely be out about $1000.00 for the repair job.

What type of freon the 85 Corvette uses

Cars of that decade use R12 I believe. I have a 1991 corvette that also used R12. I had it converted to R134 so I could do the recharge myself if necessary.

The ac is out what do i need to fix it?

Depends on what is wrong. If the compressor will not kick in and start turning when you start the A/C check the fuse. If it does start but just will not cool, then you more than likely have a leak and have lost all the refrigerant. Take it to a professional and have the leak repaired and it recharged. As this vehicle came with R12 Freon which is very, very, expensive, have it converted over to use R134 at the same time.

Honda Accord... my car need freon, r-12 is no longer permited, how much is reasonable to pay for the up grade to R134?34

I have seen do- it- your- self kits for as little as $60.00. Your probably looking at a couple of hundred for a pro to do it.

A/C is not wrking

The use of R134 came in the early 90's. The addition of a can or two of R12 would be expensive in the "86 but I used R134 when I changed the compressor (no freon to save) and it worked. The kit has a label to keep others from adding the wrong freon. The belts are different on the 1st and 2nd generation legend.

R12 to R134

You have to have the R12 completely evacuated. This is done at a repair facility that works on A/C. The only thing after that is screwing on 2 fittings to your existing lines and charge your system. Companies make retro-fit kits so the owner can do it themselves. These kits are available at most part stores.
