Try looking to see if your injectors are clogged or if fuel is getting to the fuel rail. You can take the hose that is on the fuel rail off then try starting it or just pump the gas pedal and you should see gas coming out. I had a similar problem with my 97 neon and this was my problem just try and see, you never know.

Check the timing belt. Sometimes the timing tentioner goes bad in them.

Check your engine wiring harness for a short or a broken wire. It has a black cover on it. Pull up slightly on the harness at the right side of the valve cover. There is a bracket that is bolted to the cylinder head in this area. You might have to **** on it, but do so with caution. Start the car & let it idle. Start pulling up on the harness as I described. If you pull too hard, you may disconnect a sensor by accident. If the harness has a short in it, the car should die like when you were driving it. If the car hasn't started since that day, the crankshaft position sensor may be bad.
