Suggest you go to some of the BMW forum sites for more detailed responses. This could be speed sensors located at the wheel hub area or an ABS module. The wires run up near and along where the brake pad sensor wires are located. Sensors aren't too hard to change and aren't too costly, the module, on the other hand is expensive.

hello , it sounds like you have a bad speed sensor or all 4 of them , see when the speedo plays dead like that is because (most cases ) the sensors at the wheels are bad due to water and normal driving corrosion , the data for the speedo comes from the abs module that monitors the sensors if the abs does not reed it the speedo will not reed it aswell , it will be good to scan the vehicle to see if you need more than 1 sensor there is one in each tire axel ,good luck

any number of failures can cause the light to come on, the most common is the individual wheel speed sensors, u can have the dealer test the system and get a trouble code out of it that will lead them in the right direction to the faulty circuit or sensor.
As long as the light is on the system is disabled.
