Check for a bad CV shaft

Remove the transmission sump and check for metal in the bottom and the filter. Run pressure test on the transmission to check for pump/ bearing failures

?? 5 Speed Manual doesn't have a cable for shifting. They were still using a direct linkage system until 1995. Cables don't work on Manual Transmissions. I owned a 1990 Shadow. Loved it. Never had a cable on the shifter. The speedometer cable was a pain in the **** but not the transmission.

Normal 0 To take off and put back the transmission cost around $700 labor. To open up, repair and put things together, parts and labor start at $800. So the total would be at least $1500.
Buying a used Transmission for $300, and replace the bed one for $700, would cost you $1000 at least.
The question is:
Could you find a dissent transmission of a 1986 Chevy S10 4X4.
The answer is:
Chanced are slim or none.

If the moudulator (vacuum controlled) is bad it will stay in low,Not sure what tranny,but if it has a vacuum line going to it ,start there,if you pull the vac. line off and fluid drips out ,it's bad.
If a 700r 4 speed ,Pull the cover for the governor (should have a wire clip over it,like a master cyl clip ,kinda) It's just pressed into the housing. A small amount of fluid will leak out. Just grab the governor by the end and pull it out ,The gear on the end is plactic,if it's "applecored" the governor can't work. I've replaced mine a few times.
Oh yea ,check the kickdown cable first,make sure ,if you pull on it ,you can feel the spring pressure aginst it as you get to the end.

Besides removing the rear drum and taking out the bolts that hold the dust cover. You will have to remove the cover from the rear end housing. The axel has a retanning clip inside.

In order to change the length of the shaft coming out of the rear of the transmission you would have to disassemble the transmission and install the correct length output shaft.

The problem you are having is in the transmission
It will be one of two things 99% of the time it is the govner pressure switch and pressure transducer that need to be replaced. This involves removing the transmission pan and a couple bolts that hold the sensor and transducer in place.
The other 1% of the time it is a bad valve body in the trans that has to be replaced.
I would start by replacing the sensor and transducer first, because it is a lot cheaper than a valve body and it will probably fix the problem.

Take out drive shaft take out retaner clips take hammer and hit the u-joint not the part in the drive shaft and it should come out .Then when u put it back in thecaps should slide back in when get it most the way back in get a socket and a hammer and hit it intill u can see the place where the clip gos back in hit it soft so you don't knock the needles out

there are plastic retaning clips that hold the door rods on that have probley broken remove the door panel and you will see the problem kdc744
