Smell smoke My Toyota camry 1998 has some problem. Whenever after I stop and press gas again, I smell a kind of smoke smell. When I open the engine, there is a smoke smell aslo. I do not know what happen. Can you help me? Thank you

Is there any white smoke? Could be your valve stem seals. But the Toyota Corolla in this year's is known for burning oil. If you are having to add more than 1 quart per month. You may have a problem. Check for the obvious. Milky oil. Idle it to op temp and smell exhaust for burnt oil smell. Hit the gas...see any white smoke? Open your radiator cap after running and smell for exhaust... If all is well then you have a normal running toyota corolla. These cars are champs. They just tend to burn a Lil oil here and there.

check cat converter is working as it should and is not broken or overheating. Run fault codes to check fuel settings and sensors.

The slow rising temp gauge points to a thermostat which has failed and stuck open. This is easy to replace.

At the same time the gauge will tell you if the car is overheating.

Is it losing coolant at all? A hot smell can result from leaking coolant getting on the exhaust manifold.

The smell can also result when leaking engine oil gets onto the exhaust. Camrys of that era had several characteristic oil leaks

- from the rear of the cam cover, especially on a V6
-from the distributor shaft o-ring
-from the oil filter-to-engine block mounting adapter (if fitted)

There are few possibilities that can cause such problem.

you have to determine what type of smoke it is, a white smoke is a coolant in exhaust sweet smell problem, a blue smoke is fuel and smells like it and burns eyes, a black smoke is oil, bad rings,valve seals. Stop treating it like a drag car !! HA,HA

sounds like a plastic bag got a ride and melted to the exhaust

you have either a blown head gasket or cracked head. The white smoke is coolant passing through the engine and exhaust. The gas smell is from compression leaking past the gasket or head, pushing fuel vapor into the air.

yea i had the same problem, my last mechanic didnt tighten the top where d sprak plugs go in so it was leakin oil all they way down to the bottom where the exhaust runs and was smokin because of that... had it tightned and no longer ne smoke
