WHY IS MY RADIO TUNING KNOB ABLE TO BE PUSHED IN FOR SELECTION OF FUNCTIONS BUT IS UNABLE TO TURN TO MANAGE THOSE SELECTIONS?
THE RADIO TUNER KNOB WILL NOT TURN TO SELECT ANYTHING,RADIO STATIONS INCLUDED.HOWEVER I AM ABLE TO 'PUSH' IT IN TO SELECT STEREO OPTIONS SUCH AS BASS, TREBLE,ETC I JUST CAN'T 'TURN' THE KNOB TO MAKE ANY OF THOSE CHANGES.

Click the clock button to the left of the cd slot and then turn the tuning knob to move it forward or back- then click the clock button again to do the minutes and move with tuning knob, then click clock button again to select either 12hour or 24 hour (military time- example 7pm=1900 hrs). the buttons with numbers on them are to save presets on the radio of your favorite stations- just push and hold the number you want it on after you have tuned it in with the tuning knob until it beeps and then it will be in the memory.
push on power knobs for radios are a two operation switch. push in to turn on and then push in to turn off. The switch is like a rocker switch in operation. the knob will not stay in once the radio is on as it has to be in an out position so that you can push it in again to turn it off.

Please perform the following procedures while the car is parked. Otherwise you risk getting into an accident while your attention is not focused on the driving.
Entering anti-theft code
The following is the procedure to re-activate the radio if the display shows "SAFE". It is important that the procedure be followed in the correct order.
Turn on radio. The radio display shows "SAFE".
Press the FM1/2 and DX buttons simultaneously and hold until "1000" shows on the display. Release the buttons. Do NOT press these buttons again, otherwise the radio will consider "1000" to be the code.
Use Preset buttons 1 ... 4 to enter the four-digit code number from your radio card. Preset button 1 corresponds to the first digit, Preset button 2 corresponds to the second digit, etc. Each press of the button increments the number by 1.
Once the code shown on the display is correct, press the FM1/2 and DX buttons simultaneously and hold until the word "SAFE" appears in the display, then release the buttons.
The radio should unlock and be usable shortly afterwards.
If an incorrect code is entered, the word "SAFE" appears, first flashing and then continuously. You can repeat the above steps to unlock the radio once more, the number of attempts will be shown in the display. If an incorrect code is entered again, you radio will be locked for about one hour. After one hour - the radio must stay on and the key must remain in the ignition lock - if the display goes out, the you can repeat the above procedure to unlock again. The cycle - two attempts, one hour lock-up - still applies.
If you lose your radio code, contact your Audi dealer.

This worked for me (radio in 2003 VW Golf):
Radio says "CHECK" but is otherwise unresponsive. Turning car or radio on/off doesn't help.
On the far right of the radio, there's a round TUNER button. Press it for 5 seconds. Your screen will then show some digits, but the unit is still unresponsive.
Press tuner button again for 5 seconds. Radio should now be 100% again. Let me know if this works for you.
