I have always heard a clunking sound on occasion I took it in 3 time, they never heard it...now I have 28,000 miles on it they finally heard it and said rear end is binding and clutches do not release. They fixed the grinding I've been hearing but say I need to replace the rear half shafts 900,00$. I feel that has always been the prob and would have been covered under warranty..do you think that is possible since I had it in for the noise..they just couldn't hear it...I know my car is old but I only have 28,000 miles

Check the front struts ( shock absorber ) If original or very old, they are doing no good. Also check the front TORSION BAR rubber bushings. In low temps will groan and creak, on up and down motions.

CHECK FRONT STABILIZER LINK KITS FOR PLAY.
ONE ON EACH SIDE ATTACHED TO STRUTS.

We had the same problem brought to our shop and what it ended up being is the vehicle was in an accident a it twisted the unbody frame just enough to the point it would throw off the front end angles and it has the same vibrating / rattling noise from the front end. But there area list of different problems as well

Almost certainly wheel bearings. They really roar if they become pitted.
