It's a linkage adjustment on the bottom of the vehicle, or the pointer has broken loose from the steering column collar under the steering wheel.
You can sometimes crawl underneath the vehicle to figure out what needs to be adjusted if the problem is down there.

This kind of sounds like you might of broke your shifter interlock. If that is the case you will need a new shift cable.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.

car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be
transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.
