Sounds like CV joint. Get both front wheels off the ground. start it up and and have someone listen for the source of the noise.

SOURCE: front end noise

Hi Wild Bear

No 1....... Check your wheel nuts ! !!!!!!

If OK.....

Is the problem worse on full lock, one way ?

If so, it sounds like the drive shaft CV joint is shot.

If no....

Jack up the front, support car on axle stands.

Spin your front wheels, check the treads, and I should think, you will be able to tell the problem wheel.

Expect it might be in the brake caliper area, something loose and fouling the wheel or rim ?

Check for play too, in your front wheel bearings, by gripping the tyre, top and bottom and pulling, there should be no movement.

Give these things a try, and get back to me.

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be nice thank´s

John.

SOURCE: will go into gear but wont move

Hello ! You said belt makes a noise and it goes into gear...? I have seen this on Maximas and it was a siezed ( frozen) AC compressor...I would try to remove the belt that is attached to the air conditioning compressor and see if it runs. If it runs ok you either have to replace the compressor or match up a smaller belt and bypass it if possible. If this does not help you may need to have it looked at by a professional to diag as there are other possibilities. I hope this helps to some degree.

SOURCE: POPPING IN THE FRONT END?

It could be worn suspension parts, like ball joints, tie rod ends, worn bushings. It is best to have a Front End Shop take a look at it to determine what part is worn out.

I have a 2006 chevy 1500 when i put it in four wheel drive the front end makes noise and has wheel hop at speeds over ten miles per hour

A 4 WD.is not meant to drive in four wheal drive unless on slippery surface like mud, ice, etc. the front drive wont slip like an AWD and will cause a bind if the wheals don't slip to take out the built up torque. This can damage the front lock hubs. Try it off road and see if it still dose it.

Front is making noise when I turn

Kim:

Check your wheel bearings and ball joints. Checking the wheel bearings: stand next to the front tire, crouch down, put your hands on the top of the tire, and try to rock the top of the tire by pushing the top of the tire away from you and pulling the top of the tire toward you (rock it hard and fast). do both front tires. Any noise or sideways movement of the tire is bad, (Bearings are worn) and needs to be repaired. Then, stand at the front corner of the car, and push down on the front corner of the car repeatedly (rocking the corner of the car up and down (Rock it up and down Hard) If you hear the popping noise your ball joints need to be replaced. If these tests don't work but you still get the popping noise when you drive, take the car to a mechanic. Popping noises from the front end of a car is dangerous. If anything happens up there, you could lose your steering!

Front end humming

noise is a bad sign, best is to have mechanic find it
some noises can be very very dangerous to driver for sure
the testing person,
makes noise only moving, in all gears
does it make noise moving in Neutral, coasting,
does doing that, and carefully stalling engine coasting with noise stop the noise.... yes, find a safe place to do that.
i use a steelman electronic stethoscope to find most noises.
it has a clamp on microphone, its like a $35 tools, way less that taking the whole car apart.
it will find which corner or better.
sounds to me like a bad wheel bearing.
or bent backing plate
or caliper guide pins jammed, ,rusted, or bean rotor. or? or ?
if the 4wd is disengaged, the front gears dont turn, so.....
in fact that is it prime purpose... if the the air pump is off and the lever retrated, its off. id check that tool... is front axle decoupled.....
the FSM covers this test in 1 page.
as does alldata.com ,....

I heard a loud pop, then the vehicle wont move in any gear.It then grinds when I try to put it in park.

It sounds like you broke a Constant Velocity joint (CV Joint). The pop was probably the joint breaking. When you put it in gear it's just spinning. Think of one of your hands as the transmission. Hold a pencil that would be the CV Joint(s) and axle, and use the other hand to hold the other end of the pencil. That's the front hub (part that makes the wheel turn). So you have ...hand, pencil...hand = trans, axle... wheel. If you hold the pencil firmly with both hands, and spin the pencil with one, both hands still move.

If the pencil breaks...the one not spinning does nothing.

So...The transmission is trying to make the van go, but the cv joint is broken, so the wheels aren't spinning. When you put the van in park, the transmission doesn't know the vans not moving. Therefore it's making the same noise as if you put the van in park while driving. If you must start the van and put it in gear to see if the driver's or passenger's axle is just spinning. Shut the van off, wait a minute for the axle shaft to stop spinning, and then put it in park.

1999 alero the front end makes noise like the wheel bearing or

if its clicking when you turn the wheal, then its a cv joint. If its making a bump bump bump noise as you go down the road and increases with speed and slows with speed then its probably a bering, It sounds like you have hit something and caused your ball joints to damage. take a board 2x4 about 2 foot long. jack up the car in the front, just enough to fit the board under the tires. At each tire lift the board and see if you have any movement in the wheal. The movement you are looking for will be up and down, not side to side. Your steering moves side to side. Your ball joints give you limited up and down rotation movement to allow your car to handle bumps. If its in access of an inch rotation then there is your problem. Depending on the car, I would probably look at salvage yards first then go to the part store and compare prices. Because some junk yards are chaging near new prices for used stuff. Also your struts may be shot also.
