Check your fuel pressure, and your spark. If you have good fuel pressure and spark, then it's probably something to do with either your ECM, ICM, or timing gear set. Autozone and O'Reilly's have a fuel pressure gauge that you can put a deposit on to use it. You can ask either if they can test your specific ICM, ECM.

I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville it wants to start but won't stay running. It backfires through the intake manifold. What could it be?

most possible cause is the firing order is incorrect with twp leads crossed
next most likely is a vacuum leak in the system

Initially car would cranksmoothly but not start. I cahnged plugs and wires and it started right up. Three days later i am driving along and it spits and sputters, backfires and stalled.

it is possible and the answer is to fix the coded fault and then proceed from there

Engine backfires

Take it to a shop that can check the trouble codes but most likely the computer or a sensor for TPS or Mass Air flow.

Hi, thought i had a timing probllem as when i bought it last summer i noticed the distributer was loose moving all around when it was running,, tightened it down, runs perfect in park ,,backfires under...

There is a certain procedure you have to go through to set the timing with the on board computer. It has to be in set timing mode first. Backfiring may be part of that problem. Make sure the engine is running at normal temp, and set timing as follows. Jump point A and B on the A.L.D.L connector, located underneath the dash to display the timing settings
