I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima and when I start the car a belt squeals. After a minute or two it stops. When I step on the gas it start to squeal again. taking my foot off the gas seems to stop it again. When I step on the brake to stop the car it starts to squeal again, taking my foot off the brake stops the squeal. I was told it might be the serpentine belt because of several reasons. The A/C works but it doesn't get ice cold and the same with the heat, it doesn't get very hot. it happens more so in the night damp air and not so much in the day when its dry out. While the engine is on and after the initial squeal stops, the engine has a very soft metal grinding sound almost like a pulley is out of round. So is it possible that the serpentine belt stretched to the point that it causes the engine to squeal?
Serpentine belts do not stretch as you describe because the tensioner keeps them tight so they just break. It is probably hard and cracking and need s a new one so try that first . The ac has nothing to do with the belt as it will be a low gas problem from leaks and the heat is a coolant problem or a control problem from inside the car.. The grinding sound may be a pulley bearing or some other bearing failing. Why don't you take it to a repair shop to find all the faults so that you can work out how much it is going to cost.

Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.

Belts stretch from new. Try to tighten them again. Hopefully the are not glazed or this may stay with you.

Try spraying one item at a time with WD-40 or belt dressing. Try not to worry about doing the belt first and save it for last. Most causes of squeals are galzed belts from being too tight or the pulleys of whatever item, the bearings are going out or were improperly lubed.
This is the cheapest method to truoble shoot the annyoing noises.
Hope this helps!

have the belts tightened or replaced as they are slipping on the pulleys by the sound of it

Hello, this to me sounds like your fan belt slipping (not timing belt). To adjust the fan belt you need to undo your bolt on the alternator, pull it tight onto the fan belt and while holding it tight do the bolt back up tightly. this will stop yoour fan belt from slipping. I hope this helps.
