1998 golf is a mk3 and does not have an immobiliser. Your problem is elsewhere.

SOURCE: vauxhall calibra will not start ignition light

Go to GM Vauxhall website and it will indicate where to archive User Handbooks, or invest in a Haynes Manual, which as a new owner of a late model, I would suggest, be a better and safer bet. You then have 99% of Repair and Fault Finding information. Cheaper than a Garage if you have DIY expertise.
In the UK, about 25 GBP.

SOURCE: VW Polo Immobiliser P Reg

I have the same problem with immobiliser in a 2007 golf, i have yet to figure out the problem:
Immobiliser will not allow me to sart the car but, if I let it Cool off , sometime sit between 5-120 min. it will start. i have tried succesfully the disconnect the battery for 30 min.
- it not the battery, given boost and no result
- it's not the alternator, it been tested
- Starters are effected by Temperature, i think it's the starter.
let me know what you guys think

How can I reprogram the immobilizer to my 2003 kia spectra automatic

You can't reprogram it unless you have a $5,000 bi-directional scan tool computer. You can however reset it.

I removed the battery and now the car won't start

'I disconnected the car battery/changed the car battery and now my car won't start'

Another common question on Fixya.
You've done nothing wrong. It's simply that the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key.

Put the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition on. Press the LOCK button twice on your remote. Wait 1 minute.

Turn the ignition off and press the UNLOCK button on the remote a couple of times. This will disarm the immobiliser.

The key should be recognised and your vehicle will start.

New battery, lights come on when I turn the key,as well as the fuel pump.then nothing no sound.i just rode it an hour aga

First of all, check the cleanliness and security of the battery cables - particularly the black earth lead where it connects to the engine/bodywork.

You have a fob for the vehicle? It may be because you changed the battery that the system - the immobiliser - is not recognising the key.

Put the key into the ignition and turn on. Then press the LOCK button on your fob a couple of times. Wait 1 minute.

Then press the unlock button on the fob a couple of times. Wait 1 minute.

Turn off ignition.
Turn ignition back on and press the unlock button on the fob and hopefully, the engine will start because the key is recognised

Ignition stuck on lock

1. Check battery - even if otherwise good, if it measures under 12 volts (even just under) it won't start. Saab's are finicky about that.

2. Does immobiliser recognize the key? If not, it won't turn. Are you using an original key mated to the car or a replacement key fob without the electronic guts?

3. Does key open the door? If so, put in ignition, turn to ON (if you can) and press Open Door button on key. Try even in Off position if not.

4. DO NOT spray anything into the ignition keyhole (as others may suggest). It will gum it up. If you have to, remove ignition keyhole and clean with alcohol.

Flat battery caused immobiliser problems

1-insert and remove key from ignition two times

2-close and open driver door two times

3-insert and remove key once from ign.

4-close and open drvr door twice

5-insert key into ign.,then close driver door

6-turn key to on (not start) then off, twice this is rewrite mode, have all remotes to reprogram it will clear any lost remotes.

7-remove key from ignition, the door locks should cycle twice.if not start over.it may take a few tries.

8-press lock/unlock together and hold for a second

9-release,and press lock on remote, the door locks will cycle confirming program.continue to do other remotes you have, steps 8 and 9.if only one in possession, you are done. To end mode open door or insert key into ignition.

You'll need to follow the steps with no more than a 1-2 second delay between each step.. hope it works

Program a remote key for 03 A6

I have an A4 and did this to re-program my key:

1. used the key to start the car...then turned it off
2. put the key in the driver door (door closed)
3. pressed the lock button on the key fob once
4. turned the key to lock the door.

This is basically the steps in the owners manual, but the car must be started with the key first, and the key must be in the door lock before pressing the lock button.
