I had an '88 that did the same thing, and I just ended up bypassing all that **** and put a 4x4 Posi-Lok cable actuator in that Thermal Linear Actuator is a POS, that cable locks in every time correctly sand, mud, or snow, and she's seen her fair share of all.

Front hub spline sticking out in my 93 bronco

Hello David Rowland,

Thanks for this question.

Back in the old days... Wow... This is upsetting...
(that was the extent of PLASTIC on the RUBICON)

There was a time when I knew these things... I helped a couple of buddies start a SUCESSFULL 4-wheel drive SHOP... but by the time Rubicon was becoming popular... I automatically knew
these things (the name) DANA SPICER was eluding me
but it is starting to come back. I did these things (4 wheel mechanic) because people that were dear to me liked it...
I enjoyed putting them together.

I have only been off rode a couple of times (in non-military equipment) and it was NEVER with fore thought... but always life & *****... Breaking'em...NOT MY cup of TEA.
(enough about this old guy).

ONE OF THE right people... on fixya is Juriy Hawrylak

I don't actually think anything is sticking out... I think the end cap from your HUB-LOCK is missing... and I thin if you are resourceful you can find the right manufacturer... and buy the part.

Just for visual assurances I'm going to put an eBay hub on the bottom of this article

Does your vehicle have external locking hubs? If so, make sure they are turned to lock the wheels to the hubs.

Everything in 4wd seems to work except the 4wd part :)

The locking front hubs are vacuum actuated. You need to inspect the vacuum supply to the hubs. I would provided a schematic of the system had you provide the vehicle year

I have heard of people having problems with the locking hubs. I have never had that problem, but they are very easy to pull out and tke a look. Or could be you dont have the transfer case engaged properly or there is something wrong with it. Seems like the only problems there could be.

The auto locking hubs are sort of a weak link. Many replace them with manual locking hubs, which last basically forever. Here is a set of instructions:

Will not go into 4-whell drive. Floor shift seems to work OK but 4-whell light does not come on and it does not lock the hubs

You most likely have a defective part in the front differential. Typically, the transfer case is O.K Repair is not to costly.

Was driving onto a paved access road to beach. put switch in 4 hi about 40 yards from sand , increased speed to about 10 mph heard a sudden bang in front of truck. Truck came out of 4 wheel. 4 wheel lights...

Your automatic locking hubs are broken. Very common on ford trucks. The front hubs are geared with hard nylon gears, and are easily broken. If you replace your front hubs with "warn (name brand)" manual locking hubs, your issue will be resolved, and you won't have that issue again on your truck.

If you replace the hubs with manual locking hubs, you will have to stop, get out of the truck, and manually lock in your hubs every time you want to engage your 4 wheel drive. It beats getting stranded somewhere with no 4x4 at all; like you have now.

If you replace your hubs with the factory automatic locking hubs, the issue will return again in time.

4 wheel drive not engaging 1986 4 runner IFS

The self locking hubs (or automatic hubs) are actuated by vacuum. The vacuum line is usually on the driver's side of the differential, towards the front of the vehicle on Toys. You might want to check it out and see if it's cracked, broken, or gone.
