Why would my check engine light come on and speedometer stop working at the same time on my 99 dodge stratus?

No, and a new battery may not cure the battery light being on. A low or no charge condition will turn the red battery light on, a bad battery will not. A low charge condition could have turn the check engine light on. I would have it checked before I would start replacing parts.

P0442 is a medium evaporative system leak detected. Check your gas cap and make sure it is on tight and the rubber seal is in good shape. Blown fuse and the altenators not working. The altenator can be bad to blow the fuse but all the things that you said can blow the fuse too. Sometimes the ingtion switch goes bad and ir sells good to repair this problem. All PIns on the switch are hot with the key on except the start wire it goes hot in start. easy to test with the covers removed from the collum. Tamperproof torx needede to remove the covers and #4 torx socket to install new switch bolts come with the aftermarket switch The orignial switch has torx socket might be a 3 but even Snapon doesntmake it nedel nose vise grips easily remore the bolts I lost htem as they came out and I didn't care as the new switch has new bolts

I've had crank sensor malfunction twice in as few as 4 months. This time I determined that the frayed belt, abused sensor, perhaps it was frayed first time around and missed it I don't know? Maybe this helps the next guy.
