How do you check if the ground exists for the wire that's connected to the ECT switch on a 1996 Toyota Camry?

I read your answer to the radiator fans not working. Mine works when I disconnect the wire to the ECT switch.

Hi.....

The Normal Temperature Range to the Fan Start is: A/C ON 181 F.
A/C OFF 199 F. When the Engine Reach this Temperature the Fan should start.

OK. Do this simple test.
1---- Start the engine, Desconnect the ECT Switch located on the Radiator,
See if the Fan come ON. If yes, if not go to step #2
Connect the ECT SWITCH and leave the car Running and with a Temperature gage.
See the temperature, if the Temperature go more than 199 F.
Turn the Engine OFF.
Disconnect the ECT sensor and check for Ground at the WHITE/BLACK wire.
If ground exist, Replace the ECT switch.
But if not. Check the wire for any damaged, and the ground at the Front Left Fender.
Repair as need.

2---- check the Fuse link RDI FAN . 30 amp.
Check the Fuse link CDS FAN 30 amp.
Replace if need.
And Return to step # 1.
Check the Radiator fan Relay, Rad fan relay 2 and 3. Replace if need.

Ok. I hope this help on your question.
I can give to you the WIRING DIAGRAM of the Fans, But I need a E-MAIL adress to do that.

SOURCE: radiator fan on my 1994 toyota camry

there are actually 3 temp sensors. 1 is on the top of the engine that goes to temp gauge in dash has 1 wire. next to it is a 3 wire sensor for engine control and choke. on the bottom of the radiator next to the hose is a 2 wire sensor. loosen all 3 but leave connected. get engine hot past halfway point on dash gauge. with ac off disconnect 1 sensor at time. start with 2 wire under radiator. it takes the most abuse. fan will come on when you disconnect broken sensor. 2sensor must agree for fan to stay on till engine cools when turned off. note this is solution i used after verifying fuses, fuseable links and relays worked.WOO HOO! make sure you check both the fuse box under hood and fuse boxleft side of steering wheel my ECU fuse was inside my bros was outside.ECU B on my car goes to nothing and is under hood. Had it confused with ECU on wiring diagram.DOH!

If you follow the wires from the fan, you will notice a square box which is called a relay. These relays have a tendency to fail. It may need to be replaced. You can test the resistance of the relay with an ohmmeter or multi-meter. If the relay is good, either the fan motor or sensor is shot.

SOURCE: 2003 Toyota Camry - Both Brake lights not working

Lok in the trunk on the left side, behind the carpet for a small plastic box with a bunch of wires going to it. Look to see if there is brake light powe coming in with the pedal depressed. If so, and no power is coming out, you need to order and replace the "taillamp failure sensor".

It could be the relay, which is a yellow box located under the carpeting in the trunk on the left side. It is a problem common to your model. Also, check the brake switch's (behind the brake pedal) functionality (12V present with key at ACC or ON and continuity between wires when button engaged).

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder my temperature keeps going up and down but only one fan is running ac blows great what can be the problem replace water pump already and the thermostat

The fans have there own temp control switch. This switch is electrically controlled. Find it and check for bad wires then check power. And ground then unplug the fan that's not working disconnect the battery. Now use the car battery and jump to the wires for the fan your checking to see if the fan motor works. If all checks out you need to replace the temperature control switch for that fan.

97 toyota camry both fans continue to run

2 fans behind RAD
is 1MZ engine, the 5s is different. 1fan

1mz engine has 2 switches.
the twin fan engine is 1MZ (bingo)
the 1mz has 2 switches. a real pain when know one posts engine.
FSM data: ECT switches.
sw1--opens >208f closes < 190f
sw2.-opens >199f closes < 181f

i see the PCM has CF cooling fan control too.
my online source has 30+ pages of schematics
and covers it all but skips the fan wiring.
on the right fender fues box is the 4 or more fan /AC relays.
if you unplug the ECT sw1 or 2, or the relays im sure
you will find how is missing up and work from there.

it looks to me , (A/C drawings) that the PCM and A/C amp can both
control all fans but has 2 ways to do that.
PCM can see engine heat (ECT EFI) and activate fans when engine overheats, (normal at long idle times as stop sigs)
and the 2 , SW 1,'2 temperature switches are a backup i think too
all this and is staged, first 1 fan then next,
too bad the fan relay schematic is missing..

1992 Toyota 4x4 Pickup. Overheating. Where's the ECT sensor located?

For many of the 90's and 2000's Toyota various models - Camry, Tacoma, 4 Runners, Corolla, and some other models it is usually caused by temperature sensitive fan switch on the radiator not operating. Electric fan on the radiator should operate when temp above 200 degrees. Less often the control relay 90987-03003 is defective. Check if bubbling in the radiator smells like exhaust. That would indicate a blown head gasket. A jumper wire from your marker light positive to the lower contact in the fan control relay socket will operate your fan when parking lights are on. The larger vehicles with more powerful radiator fans will need a hefty jumper from a headlight positive to avoid overheating the lighting wiring. Make sure the engine is off and warmed up to check the radiator core with your hand to see if it is getting circulation. If it is all cold the thermostat might be stuck.

I have a 2001 camry that has started overheating. The two radiator fans are not turning. The blades spin by hand but are not turning on even when the ac is on. I was thinking to check the thermostat, water...

Check the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor. Both the fans will ground through this sensor. If it is failed, the fans will not come on no matter how warm the engine.

Installing radiator

REMOVAL
1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
2. w/ CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM:
REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR COVER
3. DISCONNECT ECT SWITCH CONNECTOR FROM FAN SHROUD
4. DISCONNECT ELECTRIC COOLING FAN CONNECTORS
5. REMOVE RADIATOR HOSES
(a) Disconnect the upper hose from the radiator side.
(b) Disconnect the lower hose from the water inlet pipe.
6. DISCONNECT RADIATOR RESERVOIR HOSE
7. A/T:
DISCONNECT OIL COOLER HOSES
8. REMOVE RADIATOR AND ELECTRIC COOLING FANS
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and 2 upper supports.
(b) Lift out the radiator.
(c) Remove the 2 lower radiator supports.
9. REMOVE RADIATOR LOWER HOSE
10. A/T:
REMOVE A/T OIL COOLER HOSES
11. REMOVE ECT SWITCH WIRE
12. REMOVE ELECTRIC COOLING FANS Assembly is reverse order.

My camry 1993 engine is heating up while idling or in traffic also when ac is on. drives well on high speed without overheating

You have a radiator fan motor that is not running either due to a thermostatically controlled temp switch,(Located on the back of the radiator) a failed fan relay (in the engine compartment fuse /relay box) or a bad fan motor.
You can troubleshoot by checking for 12V DC to chassis ground at the fan motor temp switch. If you have power in you can jumper with a wire the switch wires and see if the fan runs. If it does not run then you need to check the fan relay and motor.

To test the fan you can run a wire from the battery to the fan and another wire to chassis ground to see if the fan runs. If after directly connecting 12V DC to the fan motor and it does not run the fan has failed.

As far as the you either replace it with another one or... have to figure out which 2 wires control the fan motor and jumper them out to see if the fan runs.

Electrical fans

The cooling fans always receive power form the battery. The relays, when applied, allow the ground to pass onto the fan motors to operate them. Either your relays are stuck in the "active" position, or your fan motor wires (white with the black trace) are getting an unwanted ground. Remove all 3 of the relays, and the magnet clutch relay, see what happens. If the fans quit, the relays are at fault. If the fans continue to run, you have a fan motor ground wire shorted to the ground.
