Oil Pan Gasket Replacement/ Oil Pan removal

I need to replace the oil pan gasket in a 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette. I was under the van and it looked like I just need to remove the starter prior to old pan removal? But...I have read in a couple forums that the engine must be raised and or engine mounts removed to change the oil pan gasket? Is this correct? From what I saw the oil pan will drop out once the starter is removal - so I am confused. Trying to determine how big this job is...Thank you!

Yes the starter does have to be removed but also the engine mounts must be also as the engine must be raised about 10 " to get the pan out. if you do try this make sure you have very very sturdy jack stands for the engine to just a jack as the jack will lift it but wont maintain it long enough to safely remove the pan and reinstall it......good luck and be very carefull

Once that's done the timing cover can be removed. Hint, spring for a new timing set. loosen engine mounts and lift engine at bell-housing remove oil pan bolts.and reverse.Might as well replace oil pump if you intend to keep the van.

How do I remove the oil pan gasket from my 1999 Cadillac Deville Concours

Oil Pan REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the crankcase.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Oil level indicator harness connector, if equipped
    • Exhaust Y-pipe, if needed
    • Transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
    • Oil pan bolts and the oil pan
To install: NOTE: The oil pan gasket is reusable unless it is damaged. Do not remove the gasket from the oil pan groove unless gasket replacement is required.
  4. Thoroughly clean the inside of the oil pan and the cylinder block contact surface. If the oil pan gasket is being reused, be careful not to damage it. Do not expose the gasket to cleaning solvents.
  5. If a new gasket is being installed, start the gasket into the oil pan groove and work the gasket into the groove in both directions. Once the gasket is exposed to oil, it will expand and no longer stay in the groove without wrinkles. If this condition exists, replace the gasket.
  6. Install or connect the following:
    • Oil pan. Torque the bolts, in sequence, to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • Oil level indicator connector, if removed
    • Transaxle assembly, if removed
    • Y-pipe, if removed
    • Flywheel cover, if removed
    • Oil pan drain plug. Torque it to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    • Negative battery cable
  7. Refill the crankcase.
  8. Run the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 1: Oil pan bolt torque sequence 7922vg08.gif

To change the oil pan gasket in a 93 Tercel

Stock the car doesn't come with an oil pan gasket but you can order one from rockauto.com you don't have to remove the A/C compressor for any of the jobs you listed. If you want to change the timing belt you need to remove the plastic rock guard under the motor on the passenger side. remove the spark plugs and using the socket turn the engine from the crankshaft clockwise until you are at TDC on #1 cyclinder. (compression stroke) Next remove the upper and lower plastic timing belt covers. The idler pulley is the one with the spring. Loosen the nut and remove the spring then you can remove the timing belt. It really isn't that hard to do. Maybe one afternoon.

Oil pan gasket replacement

It shouldn't be hard on that car as the oil pan is exposed. Unplug the oil plug and drain the oil. Then unbolt the oil pan, clean off the old gasket and replace. Make sure you scrape both the pan and the block clean thoroughly and then bolt back up. Don't forgot to replug the drain plug.

Oil Pan Gasket Replacement - How to - GMC Yukon 2000

No big job Really. Just locate your Drain Plug for the Oil. Thepan is right there, Remove the Bolts around the Pan and Remove. You will lose all of your oil so, Have something there to catch it all. Clean it all around the Edges of the Block where the Pan mounts with Degreaser and Make sure that you Scrape the Old Gasket off of Both the Block and the Pan. Run a Thin Bead of Blue ATV Silicone around the Pan Edge, Lay the Gasket on top of this Silicone. Put another Thin line on top of the Gasket and Reinstall. This Silicone is High Temp Silicone and will Seal Very Well. Make sure to put oil Back in the Motor! Please Rate my Response, I need all the Help That I can Get! Thanks!
