This relay provides the power to
all of a TDI's engine-based electronics.
If the glow plug light comes on intermittently by itself, check
your brake lights too.
A burned-out bulb will cause the glow plug indicator
light to come on.
Sometimes flashing is caused by a bad Brake Lamp Switch on the Brake Pedal. It was updated for free by VW .
If you can see it under the knee panel, the Brake Lamp Switch body should be Metallic Green....if it is Purple or Black it need updated.
There are a number of different causes of this problem. Check all glow
plugs. Check glow plug relay. If both are ok....This may seem
unusual...Check the brake light switch situated at brake pedal. A
faulty brake light switch will cause the glow plug light to flash
Good luck with it

thats the heater coil symbol for the diesel engines. does it stay solid at beginning as normal? if the car drives normal, then maybe its just a loose connection/wire somewhere
your car went in to limp mode...it sounds like you have got a intermitant fault with the throttle pedal.get the fault read to confirm.you can drive it but it may reoccur...you are doing no damage
this is going to sound nuts but its true.if your brakelight switch is defective that light will flash.
see if you brake lights are working.if it is automatic trans you will notice the shifter will not always release when you depress brake pedal.
if its not brakelight switch get it autoscaned with a VAG.com
Hi Andy,
Remarkably, this problem is often associated with a faulty brake light switch down at the pedal!
It happened to my '97 Sharan the other day whilst driving along, and the merest tap on the brake pedal with my left foot stopped the glow plug light flashing.
Posh folk sometimes replace the switch; I would suggest checking the connecting wires down there first :-)
Hope this helps you a bit. If it does, a "Fixya" rating would be much appreciated. If it doesn't help you, I'd be grateful if you didn't bother with a rating at present - they can't be increased later if I do manage to solve your problem! Just come back and tell me what you found. Cheers, D
