If now it won`t start it could be a spark(ignition)problem, check for spark at the plug. you should check for a code in the pcm this may help, not all codes set the check engine light. could also be a bad fuel pressure problem.

I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus (4cyl) that idles rough (almost stalls out), dies on start up and recently had a flashing engine light (backfire error). Any suggestions? No other issues, water pump and timing...

Could be the idle air control, once these start hanging up inside, they can cause as variety of problems with idle speed (can become wildly random) or simply a failure to idle at all.

These links should help:
Where is the idle air control valve located on 2004 Dodge Stratus

2004 stratus idle air control Bing

This could also be caused by a failing ignition pack.

Try removing your A.I.S. (automatic idle speed) motor, and clean the plunger, and port that the plunger goes into with throttle body cleaner or similar. Quite often this gets gummed up & sticky and will cause it to stall or idle down real low, especially when a load on engine, such as AC on, turning, etc. The purpose of this part is to step-up the idle, automatically when those conditions occur. If it shows improvement, for a while, then starts doing it again, I'd put a new one on.
