It could just be bad gas passing through or an early indicator of a failed catalytic converter specially if there is a rotten egg smell in the black smoke

SOURCE: loss of power

I would start by checking for a fouled spark plug/wire. Also, check the fuel filter. It doesn't have to be good just because it is new. Could have a factory defect.

Check the power supply going into the fuel pump relay. If it is still hot when the ignition is off then your ignition switch is probably the problem.

SOURCE: How to change spark plugs 1998 Expedition

Hi Glloyd806

the spark plug gap is .054
This is at best difficult and if not done right can destroy your heads ( about $2700.00). My advice is to have the dealership take the risk. However, If you decide to change the spark plugs yourself you'll need to know a few critical things first.
The 5.4L has aluminium heads, there is a design flaw in that the thread depth is to shallow, only 4 or 5 threads. because of this it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to apply anti-sieze on the threads of each spark plug and torque the plugs to NO MORE THAN 14 LBS. Also, if the plugs have been improperly changed before, it is to late, and you will rip the threads out when removing the old plugs.
Still wanting to do it yourself? OK here is how it is done;
Each spark plug has it's own coil, you will need a 8mm socket to remove the retaining bolt. Then disconect the coil wires on the coil. pull out the coil assembly (coil and boot). they may be stuck a little so you may need to wiggle it out. Now you are ready to remove the spark plug. You will need a THIN WALLED 5/8in spark plug socket, at least one extension, and on the #3,4,7, and 8 spark plugs you'll need a universal joint. the holes that the spark plugs are in are machined very thght and I found that I needed to try several different sockets before I found one that would fit inside the hole. Remove the old plug. apply anti-sieze on the threads of the new plug and install. DON'T CROSS THREAD, THERE IS ON SECOND CHANCE! TIP.. replace the old rubber boot with a new one and apply a liberal amount of spark plug moisture protectant gel inside the boot, spark plug end, this will save you from spark plug mis-fire due to moisture in the future. Place the new boot back on the coil and place the coil/boot back into the spark plug hole, it may need some wiggeling. Replace the coil retaining bolt (anti-sieze), reconnect the coil wires. Now do this 7 more times.

In all honesty, take it to a Mechanic, because this is a real pain in the....

Best of luck, and I'm not responsible for any damages you do :(

SOURCE: 4.9L straight six: Hard start when cold, black

Considering the regulator has no effect on starting lets save that for later. You are surely getting too much fuel. Try unplugging the TPS (hot, cold, and startup). The computer will substitute a default value and you will notice a difference if it's as bad as you say.

You have a bad fule pressure regulator to check to see if this is the problem look on your fule rail and you will see a round piece that has a vaccume line on it start car and un plug the line if gas is comming out of the regulator its bad. it floods the motor with gas it drives ok because you are hitting the gas and it allows more air in to compensate for the xtra fule, but once you let off gas its flooding out. Thats why you smell it and all the black smoke. hope this helps.

Corolla acceleration drops It runs for 5-10 minutes and then slowly acceleration start dropping and smoke starts coming from somewhere in engine (front left side). I am not sure if fuel pump is gone or...

I would suggest you to check the following

1) Carburetter (Flooding/Linkages/Overflow/Butterfly Vanes)
i) Air-Filter Assy. open and clean, check for leaks/holes
ii) Fuel Delivery System
iii) Fuel Tank for rust/sediments
iv) The grime on the carb can be from regular running and if the carb floods, then gummy petrol smelling deposit.
v) Also Check the Distributor Advance/******.
vi) If there is grime inside the carb, then the air-filter has a leak.

2) For the transfer-case
2A) Check if the oil on the T-Case is gear-oil (sulphur smell) or black/brown Engine Oil.

2B)If it is Engine Oil then you may have a problem with your
i) Crank Case

ii) PCV Valve - Postive Crankcase Ventilation Valve

iii) Main Bearing Seals, this is the worst case, indicated by the clutch becoming slippery i.e engine oil on the clutch pate & Assy.

2A ii) Check and clean the Breather Plugs. If the Plugs are blocked, then while running, the oil heats up and the hot air/gasses cannot escape, thereby creating a High Pressure inside the T-Case and vent through the oil-seals or weaker joints (sealing).

iii) After Cleaning the Breather if there is Gear Oil on the T-Case after running, service the T-Case.

Gass is not going in to intake

Souds like you need to replace the SPI unit (the spider). Also make sure you have the proper fuel pressure, otherwise it will not open the poppets on the SPI unit. I think Min pressure is 60 psi.

The fuel cut off only activates when you are involved in an accident.
Otherwise you are looking at a different problem.

Smoke problem

hey
there are couple of smoke type.blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel, and white smoke is water, if it clears after starting and running a few minutes it's probably your valve guide seals leaking oil down on top of your pistons, causing it to smoke until burned off and foul your plugs.
