Yes, unplug the battery for 30 seconds, and the ECU will reset. If the light comes on again, get the error code read to see what the ECU thinks is the problem. At 170,000 miles, this is likely burning oil causing a misfire, might be the engine temp sensor wires are broken (causes hard starts when cold), might just be low power steering oil or even worn brake pads causing a low brake fluid level.
the lights are unrelated and each requires a scanner to check the cause of the warning light, there are many fault codes poss to cause the malfunctions.
The OBDII system was implemented on most vehicles in 1996. Therefore, your vehicle would not have this system.
Prior to OBDII, some vehicles had what was called OBDI. This system would give failure codes, but this often required cumbersome steps involving connecting two data terminals and then counting
flashes.
That being said, the most common cause of maintenance required lights is failed oxygen sensors.
Use a narrow object(like tip of a pen) and push the 'red' build-in button around the instrument panel and the button will turn back to green and the maintenance required light will go off.
First answer made by an idiot, don't answer unless you know something!. The answer is not in your owners manual. A Chrysler diagnosis machine is required to reset the light in a 1989 or later Dakota. Prior to that there is a little blue control box mounted above the e-brake that you take loose after removing the dash cover. Poke a pencil into the small reset hole on the side while the truck is running and your light will go out. Your dealer will do it for about $140!
