Question about 2007 BMW 335i Sedan

1 Answer

If my 2007 BMW 335i needed an oil change badly and was low on oil, would the engine fault light come and say reduced power?

Would the overdo oil change and low oil cause the engine fault light to come on and run on reduced power?

The N54 engine takes 7 quarts of oil with every oil change. But you shouldnt have to worry about that in the US because BMW covers all maintinace for the fist 4years or 50k miles. its not that hard to do though if you do need to perform it yourself.

One in boot on the right hand around the battery somewhere, one under dash and could also be one under the bonnet, would be over to the left hand side of the vehicle. Not had to touch the electrics on any of these yet but generally thats where they hide.

It means that the engine power has been reduced - either automatically when the brain of the car has detected a mechanical problem in the engine or you have engaged the rain mode.
Usually this happens when you use a low quality fuel. But i've stumbled on rare cases when the Vanos sensor valve was the cause. The only way to precisely tell which is expensive and implies a visit to a dealer.

it is limp mode operation and is actuated by engine and/or transmission fault
preliminary checks include coolant level, sump oil level , transmission oil level if check able
after that run the fault codes

Will the check engine light come on when it is time for an oil change?

It may, but you should not rely on that. Change your oil every 6 months, or 7,500 miles.

Is your oil level or radiator coolant level low? It sounds like the engine is going into "Limp Home" mode to save the engine.

What is a limp mode

limp mode is when the ECM reduces power in the engine to prevent damage to the engine and gear box. It allows you to get the car to a position of safety to check items like oil and coolant levels and temperature .Run fault codes to find the cause of the limp mode

Oil pressure light staying on when ticking over,or braking

The fault is indicating low oil pressure, when the engine revs are low the oil pressure drops, first thing to do is change the oil pressure switch (cheapest option), see if that cures the fault. If not have the oil pressure checked, if the fault is the oil pump, then it could cause serious engine damage. Needs to be check out as soon as possible. Good Luck

Serivce engine light could mean a lot of things from your gas cap is not tight to oil cahnge to spark plugs are dirty. You need to pull the codes to find what is wrong with it.

What is the meaning of the oil light symbol on the instument panel

if it comes on while driving down the road or while the engine is running, you may have low oil pressure due to lack of oil. Also if oil filter is cloged due to not changing the oil it will reduce oil pressure and cause light to come on. if checked and this is not it then it will be the oil sending unit and since you have a light, be shure to tell your parts house that you have a light and not a gauge.

Dodge ram trouble codes p0298 and p0296

P0296 Cylinder 12 Contribution/Range Fault
Is triggered when the Power Train Control Module (PCM) detects that the acceleration rate of the crankshaft for Cylinder #12 was less than a calibrated amount. During normal conditions the PCM turns the Fuel Injectors ON and OFF in the Fuel Injection System.
Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine Misfire
- Engine Run Rough
- Low MPG

Possible Causes:
- Fuel Injector #12
- Faulty or Corroded Fuel Injector #12 Connector
- Plugged #12 Fuel Injector
- Dirty #12 Fuel Injector

Possible Solution:
- Clean Fuel Injector #12 Connector
- Clean Fuel Injector #12
- Replaced Fuel Injector

P0298 - Engine Oil Over Temperature Condition
Indicates the Engine Oil Temperature Protection (EOT) strategy in the Power Train Control Module (PCM) has been activated. This temporarily prohibits high engine speed operation by disabling injectors, reducing the risk of engine damage from high engine oil temperature. Note: On engines which are equipped with an oil temperature sensor, the PCM reads oil temperature to determine if it is excessive. When an oil temperature sensor is not present, the PCM uses an oil algorithm to infer actual temperature. Engine shutdown strategy function is the same on vehicles with and without oil temperature sensors.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- Engine Surge

P0298 is set when the vehicle has been running below 1,000 rpm and less than 20 mg/stroke MFDES with EOT sensor signal reading above 110C (230F). The time to set the fault is dependent on EOT and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) temperatures, and can vary between approx. 15 to 45 minutes

Possible Causes:
- Very high engine RPM for an extended period of time.
- Overheating condition.
- Malfunction EOT sensor or circuit (vehicles w/EOT sensor).

Possible Solution:
1. Inspect EOT sensor circuitry at sensor and PCM. Inspect for damage, loose or pushed-out pins, loose or poorly crimped wires
2. If connectors are ok check cooling system, radiator, fan/clutch operation, thermostat
3. If cooling system is ok carry out KOEO On-Demand Self Test
4. If other fault codes are present after test repair them, if only P0298 is present clear codes
5. Let vehicles sit for 8 hours and then KOEO
6. Monitor EOT in live data
7. If EOT sensor reading is above 110*C(230*F) replace sensor
8. IF EOT is below 110*C check continuous memory DTCs
9. If P0298 is present replace PCM

Hope helps (remember rated and comment this).
